The Power of Birds

We all like to be told stories that allow us to imagine other worlds and live in them. But we also like to recreate stories, to tell them, because that allows us to connect with the fabulator that we all carry inside: to build stories is to build worlds. Although listening to stories is fundamental for children who need to understand how the world is created in order to inhabit their own universe, adults also need to reconnect with that child they carry within to continue dreaming and believing, and what better way than telling stories.

In this series of posts that I have proposed I have had the opportunity to remember children's stories that lead me to a past of innocent games and activities, where believing and imagining was part of everyday life. As well as, it has led me to investigate and find stories that I didn't know, and that have opened more my experiential spectrum and my curiosity. From these memories remains the image of my grandmother as the centre of my universe, as a magician and speaker who painted supernatural and exciting universes.

I remembered, for example, as a result of the darkness that has enveloped Venezuela for three consecutive days, many stories about nocturnal and flying animals: butterflies, bats, birds. The birds as bearers of natural and incredible signs, emissaries of good news, but also of misfortunes.

As I said, I remember that once, although it is not a bird, a long time ago, in the state where I live, Sucre, there was a proliferation of a type of butterfly night, black, large and hairy. Specifically, they spread through Carúpano, Tunapuy and El Pilar. The lint that comes off these butterflies causes scoriations and irreversible visual damage. When these butterflies appear, it is ideal to light large bonfires to attract them and burn them in the fire. It is said that these butterflies are evil beings that appear in the darkness and that they arrive to bring misfortunes so when they arrive, beyond the bonfires, in many villages masses are made and holy water is poured through the squares and streets to clean them of possible misfortunes.

Just like these butterflies, I remembered that there are legends that speak of birds that with their flight can predict beatitudes, economic bonanza and love, but also unhappiness and sadness. I would like to talk about some of them.

In Venezuela there are countless birds considered as bad omen, such as the Pavita, the Piscua or the Chaure. The song of these birds announces the death of someone close or misfortune. Normally when you hear the song of this type of bird, people cover their ears or try to scare them away. For example, it is said the singing of Chaure resonates in the distance, like a fateful echo, that predicts the death of the person who hears it or of someone close to it. If people listen to their song, they should shout: Go and suck the bones of the Blessed Sacrament or Saint Jerome, take it away. These words are a strange spell for the bird to move away or the evil does not the evil does not fall on the person who hears it.

Similarly, when we read the famous novel Doña Bárbara by the great Venezuelan writer Rómulo Gallegos, we will find that Juan Primito, one of the emblematic characters of this story, talks about the Rebullones, strange birds thirsty for blood, bearers of tragedies and deaths, which were only appeased with warm blood. To do this, the character had to put cow's blood on the roof of the house or else the birds would come in to steal the blood of its inhabitants.

There is the same belief with the zamuros. These animals have always been considered turkeys because they are close to the dead. It is said that if there is no animal in a state of decomposition and the vultures appear, they are presaging bad times and desolation, so it is necessary to scare them away. I even once heard an uncle say that vultures advise women to leave their husbands and go with other men. I think he really talked about some men being considered vultures because they may be turning someone else's flesh. ;)

Just as these birds that foreshadow bad things, there are others that can predict various things, like the pigeon or the swallow, that if they suddenly come to your house is synonymous with happiness and abundance. That is why it is said that killing a swallow brings you bad luck and can even make you blind.

Case apart is the famous Alcaraván, which according to some elders, if this bird sings near a house, is announcing the pregnancy of a woman. About this belief, I once had the good fortune to visit the Venezuelan plains.

There, in the middle of the night and among cattle, the singing of the Alcaraván was heard. At that time all the women looked at each other and the oldest said: Here is a pregnant woman and she doesn't know it. We all deny the omen and even laugh at beliefs. A month later, one of the women who was present that night gave the news that she was waiting for the stork (another bird). The Alcaraván had not been mistaken.

I don't know about you, but I like to listen to people who awaken my imagination, even if it's with stories that are hard to believe, with impossible and fantastic stories. In this time when dreaming is impossible and reality is a daily and systematic slap, we need to open doors that take us to other worlds, whether listening to music, reading books or listening to stories. I know that many of these beliefs have some naivety, superstition and even ignorance, but even so, I transmit them to you. Because I don't know about you, but in spite of adversities, I don't intend to give up dreaming.

Dear @nancybriti, I loved this post about birds. I have read that birds, since ancient times and in all cultures, have carried many symbolic meanings. Familiar to Western culture are oriental tales such as the fox and the marvellous bird (which is also a storyteller) or the ancient Greek rites, told in The Iliad and other documents from Western antiquity, of reading the future in the flight of birds. In Venezuela, as you well say, the symbolic tradition around birds is very rich and you synthesize it very well through emblematic birds.
The "zamros", birds that I saw with pleasure that you quote, have special meaning for me. It is not only what they mean culturally, but the "zamuros" have been incorporated into my personal system of symbols and I have put them in my stories and drawings, because they seem to me to be animals of a majestic flight, a tragic beauty in a way, because they are destined to watch over the threshold of death.
In a totally opposite direction, parrots are for me the purest expression of joy and I have the joy of hearing them very early in the morning as they land on the trees of my neighbourhood in noisy flocks, talkative and restless.
Beautyful post, @nancybriti. An excellent choice of @adsactly publication.
A hug!

I share your appreciation, @adncabrera. Reading your comment, I realize that I left several birds outside. Maybe I focused on the premonitory birds, the ones that bring with them invisible signals, but that people know and fear. Maybe I should make a post with more magical and colorful birds. Thank you for always commenting. Hugs for you too.

@nancybriti, How you've described your Grandmother is really deep and i really loved those words. Yes, stories may be Imagination but most importantly we need thoughts which will going to keep us in Enthusiastic, Motivated, Creator and Action Oriented mode and stories will going to help in that because more stories we hear and create, more our world of imagination increases and we will going to expand our vibes to achieve high position in our life. Stay blessed.

@adsactly Team, Keep promoting awesome articles.

I really appreciate your words, @chireerocks. There is an imaginative power in stories. That's why it's recommended that children be read to, that they write stories. Stories set in motion a super important part of the brain that helps us withstand so much reality. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you so much and welcome. And these words are really true. Have a blessed time ahead.

I really liked your post, @nancybriti, for bringing us that little legend about the power of birds. Unfortunately there seem to be more stories in our culture of meaning or fateful burden or bad omen (like Poe's crow) than charming or beneficial. I prefer, here, to consider songbirds.
My childhood was accompanied by these because in my house there were different cared for by my father; some power exercised over me, although perhaps I didn't realize it then. Then I heard a respected researcher and connoisseur of the mythical and esoteric worlds (Jean Marc de Civrieux) speak of the "language of songbirds", and that "enchanted" me. And to crown this vision, the encounter with the poem of the Venezuelan writer Eugenio Montejo: "The terredad of a bird is its song". And since then, the song of the birds, which is their power in me, inhabits me.
Thank you for your stimulating article. Greetings.

What beautiful words, @josemalavem. In Venezuela it was customary, especially in old houses, which were very spacious and open, to have a space for birds. I remember going to some of them and seeing how the birds came to eat and sleep in the trees. I also believe, like you and the great Montejo, that the deepest part of the bird is its song. Thank you for always commenting.

in traditional culture we know several types of birds as a sign of an event. And the belief in things like this is true in every region that still uses oral speech and has confidence in things that are not only occult, but as a characteristic of traditional wisdom.
In my area there are small bird who, if they sing around the house, indicate guests are coming.
Likewise if there is a crow ringing near the cemetery or around the house, a sign that someone will die in the area.
As a tradition this is a natural thing, but behind it all contains good intentions. The ancestors taught the kit to live side by side with the environment and we should not do things that would become the righteousness and the place we live.
Thank you for @nancybriti

Yes. I think each country has its own legends and culture. From a very young age we grow up with certain beliefs. Some of those beliefs we lose, others are maintained. Thank you for always commenting, @rokhani

I also love to listen to the stories of old. Such as a crow's cry means bad news etcetera. It requires an open and imaginative mind to dream of another world where we can understand bird languages and the whispers as the wind blows through the trees.
A great post here my friend!
Blessings!

That's right, buddy, it's all in the imagination! Thank you for your comment.

hello @adsactly!

Excellent content, based on traditions of Venezuela.

we Venezuelans let ourselves be carried away by the stories of the grandparents, stories that they gave us at night so that we could go to bed early.

I would have liked more studies than traditions.

That's right, @tramelibre. Grandparents, though they may not have read stories, always managed to make up stories. Thank you for commenting.

Hola interesante post y gran contenido referido a estos majestuosos animales... desde mi vlog llevo un trabajo artístico dedicad a las aves de Venezuela y me pareció interesante este trabajo que nos presentas acá. Saludos desde Venezuela.
