Gratitude Day 5: I'm Thankful For My 7am-10pm Class Hours

I started teaching my 7am -10pm class hour stint were for a year or so and it was not permanent. The 7am-10pm work schedule was deliberately done to gain some extra income when I started working. It was not that my pay was not enough, its just that I needed extra income for a very important project. That project is to pay for my wedding.

Weddings aren't cheap, even for a small and simple one, it requires a sizable sum. Thankfully for my line of work, I was able to secure two jobs teaching at different institutions. My work schedule consists of starting at my school from 7am until 4pm. Subsequently, I would have two hours to travel to the next institution and have dinner before my next class.

The Toll My Working Schedule Took On Me

My working schedule was crazy and it wasn't long before I started feeling the effects of it. I got home late at night tired. I could do nothing but slump down on the bed and sleep. I would wake up the next morning feeling as if I was hit by a train. Remembering back at that time, the only thing that kept me going was coffee, lots and lots of it.

That being said, at least I had the weekends to recuperate. Since I was young at that time, such a stint was definitely possible. There were a few times that I was really tired that my body went on autopilot. I don't know if you have experienced it before but I was so tired that I continued rambling to my students about literature but I was half asleep.

But I'm Thankful...

As much as it was a difficult working experience, I was still thankful for a few things. Firstly, I managed to get enough money to pay for the wedding. This was a good eight years ago by the way. It was such a wonderful feeling not having to take out a loan just to pay off the wedding. As such, I was thankful for that crazy work schedule.

The second thing that I am thankful for was the experience to work in other places aside from my school. At my school, I was a teacher trainer and things were seen from the perspective of a teacher trainer. Having the opportunity to teach in other institutions. That particular institution was a dumping ground for all the worst students in my town. Having the opportunity to work with those students definitely helped me in my career. For one, it helped me give better feedback to my teacher trainees. Instead of telling my teacher trainees on idealistic methods from the textbook, I now have experience to supplement those methods.

The third thing that I am thankful for was the opportunity to meet potential employers. It was nice knowing that some were even willing to offer me a full time job. Some of these employers and connections made has helped me in many ways, even in my current studies.

Conclusion

This is the fifth day on writing about things that I am thankful for. After writing for the last five days, I think one very important thing to remember is perspective. With the right perspective in mind, it wouldn't be difficult to bear even the toughest of challenges.

Aside from having the right perspective, it is important to have a goal in mind. It is with that goal in mind that I was able to go through with those long hours of teaching. I won't have known all this if I did not have to go through certain hardships in life. For that, I am thankful.

Ditto! This will be a good topic for now. Thank you @alvinauh

No problem! Have fun! Hope you have a blast from this experience.

Sure bro. Cheers

There were a few times that I was really tired that my body went on autopilot.

I have definitely have the feeling of being on autopilot several times on my life. But I guess it is better to have a lot of things to do and opportunities to take, than having 0 things to do and 0 opportunities right?

Cheers @alvinauh!

Definitely! Better to have achieved something feeling absolutely tired than to achieve nothing for the sake of convenience, sometimes some effort is definitely required , thanks for stopping by!

Very true about proper perspective, even if it is subjective to a person. And goals are extremely important!

Indeed! Helps to keep us focus and moving forward through the toughest times

What an awesome post, with MANY things for which to be thankful! I will be joining this challenge soon, as I was tagged as well. Great job on your response to the positivity! 😊

Thanks! In this ever challenging world, I think its important to stay positive or else, the only other option is to sink into despair. Hope you have a blast on the challenge! It has benefited me a lot as it makes me reflect on the great things that has happened instead of the bad things that are happening now

I understand how it was like. I was doing something like that for a couple of years too due to financial commitment. I have a slightly opposed experience. In school, I am usual teaching the low progress learners so I have limited opportunities to teach the high progress learners. In the evening, the additional job that I had taken enabled me have the exposure of high progress learners. This really helped to widen my teaching skills. Cheers that you are debt free from wedding!

That's right, think its one of the great things about teaching is that you can choose if you want to go ahead and gain more experience through outside gigs. The more gigs you take, the better your experience, of course, some do help in gaining some extra income

That must have been so hard!!! But having to pay forever for a loan is not much fun either!!

Indeed, its good to pay off things without having to take a loan, most things cost so much that a loan is required these days.. sigh..

I think that is where we have to build community and do crowdfunding - or just refuse to buy the expensive items. If n0 body buys them, they get cheaper....

Hiya @alvinauh

Wow, that's some work schedule. It's great that you achieved your goal of saving for the wedding.

I remember working myself half to death when my last child was born. I was a single parent. It was a tough time and I was always exhausted -- work all day, awake most of the night with a baby.

Looking back, I don't think it was worth it. I did this to make sure I had enough money for the essentials and some luxuries, but it came at a big cost to my family. There were many days where I was just too tired to give my kids what they needed -- an available mum with energy and enthusiasm.
