Heat rose in shimmering waves from the desert sand. Just keep moving. Vultures circling overhead in a waiting pattern. Raging thirst racked his body. As he dropped to his knees the vultures landed, coming closer to watch with beady eyes.

reminded me of some flaming roses (but what were they called) from a game in the deserts of an alien planet.
That game sounds familiar but I can't quite place it.
