Abandoning YouTube

in #youtube7 years ago (edited)

So yesterday I watched @AmericanHomestead 's farewell vid on YouTube. Today I watched Bigfamilyhomestead's on camera struggle to understand YouTube's motivation for alienating both their content producers, and their viewers by demonetizing those that produce content designed to show people how to live independently.

I, like many others can't help but think that these actions by YouTube are not advertiser driven at all, but instead politically driven. I think execs at Google have decided that those who think independently of the mainstream sock puppet out there, are what is moving along the populist wave that they are so fearful is destroying a globalist agenda that they felt had been working so well for them. In short, they had to stick a cork in the hole in their socialist boat!

It just came down to the fact that Google felt that their own media was pushing along a world view that violated their California, socialist, liberal sensitivities, and like the liberals they are comprised of, they couldn't stand to make an argument, opting instead to crush those with a view that opposes theirs. Google knows that the most effective way to silence the opposition is to hit them in the pocketbook.

And let's face it, why fund those you disagree with! It's a win-win in the mind of Google execs. They begin to thin the herd of the disagreeable people who obviously elected Donald Trump, and if they stay, they still get to make money off of their followers, without the associated cost!

So here's the deal for the content creator's, either they leave, giving Google a politically correct, sanitized, sufficiently censored medium that more closely matches Google's desired world view, or they stay, and produce free content just to stick it to Google on the principle of free speech, thereby giving away their services, and being taken advantage of. Every content creator must decide in this sad state of affairs. What a unenviable position.

Personally, this is tough not only for the content creators, but also for viewers, of which I am one. I am grateful for the alternatives here at Steemit, but I watch YouTube mostly in an app that runs through my PlayStation 4. I have developed one-sided relationships with these self reliant channel creators. I am invested in their product. Frankly, I wouldn't watch a network if you paid me, but these poorly paid people are producing far better content than just about any cable, or movie steaming enterprise, and it's not laced with crap I don't want to see, or designed to convert my mind into a controlled drone!

Google, of course, wants to change that! They like producing drones they can control with click bait! I get it.

However, as a consumer, I want to watch content sitting in my living room that inspires me, makes me think, and pushes me beyond myself! This one reason why I adore Steemit! Still I am waiting for that PlayStation app, that puts video content, and top quality producers at the touch of my fingers on my PlayStation controller!

If that can happen, then Google is going to need some help recovering from the beating they will take in viewership! Maybe I've missed something here on Steemit. It is so hard to find just exactly what you are looking for here, and then save the links so you can get back to it when you need it, but I am looking forward to being able to abandon YouTube myself without losing my viewing options!

I too am waiting for that video service replacement. I am a visual learner and while steemit is great for me as a content producer I do better as a content consumer when it is in video form. Unfortunately, I think it will be a long time before we see a fringe video service pick up enough steem (see what I did there 🤣) to find them on our tvs.

CarbonTV is getting there for outdoors and guns. If they are smart they will pick up homesteaders and more in the near future.

Carbon TV? I have never heard of that. I will have to look into it.
I was a subscriber to so many channels on youtube but lately... it's just not the same. Too much of the political realm has flowed into YT and it has become a viewing nightmare. I have seen people with channels leave the platform and even ask followers to view their latest video to get approval because YT is stating the content is NOT proper. etc.. now keep in mind these are cooking videos of an older woman making desserts and southern food... really? Not appropriate? sheesh YT!

you're right about YouTube- they've finally set their algorithm to censor any truth movement topics and that shed light on what's really happening in the world.

Well said! Youtube is straight pushing an agenda.

It will be a sad farewell to lose all those content makers. I often say if you want to know how to do anything there will be a video on YouTube which shows you how, but it's looking like that may not be true in the future.

Most general purpose "how to" videos, at least from small content creators will not be going anywhere anytime soon. Even if some of the larger creators do leave.

Most videos are not beig taken down as long as they (the videos content) are not political or overly consevative.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
I personally have never made more than $185 a month on YouTube. And almost every month now I still make $100 or more.
And none of my videos have been demonetized yet.

But I also don't have a huge following. Nearly all of my views are google/youtube suggested videos. I won't leave as long as YouTube is willing to pay me AND host the videos for free.

And that free hosting is one of THE BIGGEST reasons that nearly all YouTube creators shouldn't leave. At least all with even a medium sized (500+) real loyal following. They can use the YouTube hosting and embed elsewhere. They can get Patreon support that will makeup more than the YT revenue ever could be.

I think its fine for a few confident YT's to make a big stand and leave.... But if they really mean it...they shoyld delete all their videos from YT. Now...that would be dumb. Even if they are all already demonitized. But if they are going to make a stand "I am leaving YouTube" then they should DO IT.

Now you said these demonitized creators or their demonitized videos will still make money for YouTube without having to pay the creators anymore. Is that true? Do they still advertize on videos they said they cant advertize on??? THAT WOULD BE A GOOD NEWS STORY. IF you can document it and prove it!!!
That would show them to be liars indeed.

As it is, I dont watch enough YT to know if they do or don't advertize on demonitized videos.

Do you also cross post to Dtube and receive steem/SBD for the same content? And let your subscribers know another option is available. Might in time become a way better stream of revenue. :-)
Cheers

I have yet to be able to watch a single dtube video. One 2 devices and 1 laptop they have not opened for me. I wont use it until it works with most devises.

I have used the dsound ipfs and that works fine for me.

My youtube videos are so diverse that i only have about 25 active subs(out of 2000). And I dont post with regularity. But I have vids from 1.5 years ago that still get hundreds of views a day. YouTube suggests them under other related videos.

If interested...my link is on my cover page. Lots of Fossils, treasure hunting. Nature. Spiders. And then random other stuff.

Is this codyinpanama?

Yes, that's me. I opened a zap only account to beta test and put on my phone.
I may merge the 2 later but thought zaps and blogs should be seperate. Only time will tell :-)
I already find myself cross posting, because I can't reply at zappl.com yet and sometimes forget which account I'm on. Probably get my phone online and download the Android app soon, then this will be sorted out.
Cheers
