YouTube and Their Crazy Algorithms, Contributed by @TangerineTravels

in #youtube7 years ago

We've been working hard to grow our YouTube following for the last couple of months and over the course of the last week, we've come to find out that YouTube can make or break your channel based on how you rank in their algorithms.

One day, we'll have our best day ever. Then the very next day will be our worst in two weeks! YouTube is really screwing with our emotions as they've been messing with their algorithms.

This graph shows the performance of our YouTube channel over the past 40 days or so. You can see that one day recently, we had only 2,000 minutes watched and every day we've had wild swings in viewership reaching nearly 8,000 minutes.

We're convinced that these wild swings are due to YouTube's algorithms.

What motivation would YouTube have to do this?

We were trying to brainstorm why YouTube might be doing this to our channel. Ultimately, the goal of their website is to get as much traffic to their website as possible and to keep those people on YouTube as long as possible. Or, at least it would make sense to us if that's what they're trying to do.

Are they testing out how many people we're sending to YouTube?

Are they seeing how many clicks we get when we rank higher and lower in the search results?

Are they seeing how many minutes people watch when YouTube recommends our videos versus when they're not recommending them as much?

Are they running tests to somehow determine just how good our content is?

I think they're doing the latter and running some kind of test. I think that their algorithms have told them that our channel puts out good content and now they're running tests to see just how high they should rank us.

Do you have a YouTube channel? Have you experienced wild swings in your viewership?

We've seen swings in our viewership before but it has never been anything close to this extreme!

If you have a YouTube channel with active followers, you know that your minutes watched spike every time you upload a video. However, since we're uploading new videos every day, those spikes shouldn't matter too much when it comes to the variations in minutes watched each day.

If we're right about them running tests to see just how good our channel is, I sure hope we pass those tests. We're checking our stats every day and are anxious to see where things go from here.

Until then, we'll continue promoting our channel in any way that we can, and we'll see what happens. I hope you found this post at least somewhat interesting. It's one of those things that's very intriguing for us but might seem completely uninteresting to an outsider.

Wow... Its Interesting to know that you won't give up on promoting the channel. Consistency is key in everything, I must say. Weldone @tangerinetravels Your works has always been amazing. Thank you @communitycoin for bringing out the diamonds in people. Bless you

I really don't know how YouTube works, and this really opened my eyes and gave me an idea how it works. I feel they are trying to see how good your content is because of the growing numbers of subscribers and views you get. Maybe they designed an algorithm to see when to approach you when you have gotten to a particular level.
They should stop messing with your emotions, or I might have to write them a letter.

It's a total strange topic to me like you suggested at the end of your post, I'm just a regular YouTube user. But hearing you facing such difficulty despite how much sacrifice it's required to make a video on YouTube is something of a concern to me.
I don't understand how their rating works, but seen it going to that extreme low end within the space of just 40 days is not encouraging.
I think that's the weakness dtube are making their on strength.

Only if this people know how much ener6it is required of one to come up with videos, they will changed their approach of rewarding their content creators.

Like you suggested, the best thing is to stick to what you believe .

I would say you should keep promoting your page because with the rate at which your views and subscribers are growing, there is little they can do to stop you. Your content is good. I like it so much

If it's for share numbers, YouTube is okay, but as far as the money goes, YouTube is really erratic and I think you should promote steemit more. Hopefully you'll get the best of both @tangerinetravels. Good luck

We're actually not trying to build our YouTube channel for the small amount of ad revenue that may come from it. We're trying to build our following there for a few other reasons:

  • It will allow us to get sponsorships
  • Possible Patreon opportunities
  • Affiliate marketing options
  • Once we get big enough, we should have opportunities to get paid to do fun activities that we'd otherwise have to pay for.
  • YouTube is the 2nd most popular search engine in the world. It gives us a ton of new exposure and it will allow us to promote Steem/it to a much larger audience.

More than anything though, it helps to build our brand and diversify our income streams.

I thought as much, especially with the need to build the brand. Best of luck guys. Keep on rocking

YouTube is owned by Google, and this mimics Google's own algorithm for establishing your site's rankings for search terms. You'll typically go through a roller coaster of ups and downs for a few weeks before the algorithm determines your new rank. In this case, YouTube is likely doing the same, looking to establish how much it wants to promote your videos!

Also note that depending on your audience, you could be seeing changes due to summer break, finals testing in college, and more. These next couple of weeks are the most turbulent according to one of our team members (@capnsostre) who's been running a YouTube channel for a few of years now.
