Writing Prompts (Week 1) - Harris's Wish

in #writingprompt6 years ago

Glass shattering, Father yelling, dog barking, Mother wailing.

The orchestra of violence began its twisted symphony once again in the apartment Harris called home. This time he was bent over Grade 10 Calculus, finding refuge in complicated equations and marveling at their orderliness. These questions might be difficult, but they could be solved by the correct method and he could arrive at the correct answer. Harris sought refuge in them an orderliness from the chaos that ensued after school and on weekends.

He groaned inwardly. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony could not drown out the live orchestra; the pale yellow curtain separating his little room and the living room was not at all soundproof. Harris was loathe to leave his chair. With legs still crossed, he continued twiddling his pencil as if nothing of concern had happened.

Then the glass shattering and Father yelling and dog barking and Mother wailing grew in volume and intensified to a point that Harris could no longer ignore. Today’s concerto was louder than usual. It was too loud. He felt anger and resentment welling up, like hot lava melting his usual icy apathy. He told Mother to leave Father. He told her but she refused to listen. Always.

The orchestra of glass shattering and Father yelling and dog barking and Mother wailing had just reached a crescendo. Fortissimo. That was it, Harris thought, he had to step in. He took the Swiss army knife that he had hidden beneath a neat stack of Physics and Math homework in his drawer and spun the blade out, before passing through the thin yellow film into the living room.

Harris was met with the same familiar sight: Father crouching over Mother. Belligerent, fully drunk Father lashing his belt out as a cruel master cracked his whip at his poor mule. Mother kneeling down in a grey-stained dress with the most swollen and puffy eyes, head bent and almost touching the ground. Scruffy the Border Collie was just running around them tirelessly in circles and barking the whole time, as if telling Father to stop.

But Father never did til he finally collapsed like a dead man, inebriated beyond consciousness. He would not stir, still and unmoving, til the rays of the noonday sun shone through their apartment’s tiny windows. Sometimes, a great many times, Harris had hoped that Father would lie there, still and unmoving, forever.

Now - he’ll make that wish come true.

This short story is dedicated to anyone suffering from domestic violence.

Please, know that domestic violence is not okay, and please seek appropriate help as soon as you can. My heart goes out to you, whoever you are <3

P.S. Thank you @themarkymark for organizing this great contest! I was very thrilled when I first heard about it. Looking forward to many more weeks of writing with y'all!

This message is so important and should be spread! Thank you for taking part in it. There are too many women and men suffering each day, not knowing if they will survive the night and being in the same circle over and over again. Alcohol makes people reveal their worst character and anger and they for some reason try to release it on the people they should take care of - their families. I understand the reaction of their son in your short story. How could he look at what is happening to his mom? But how come that she doesn't leave this brutal man? He doesn't understand why she finds it so difficult. He can't understand her fears.. and this is why he is going to resolve it forever. I would never judge someone like him. He and his closest person are going through hell and he only sees one solution. Is it the right one? Who are we to judge? We are not in their shoes..

Again, thank you for sharing this story. I hope it will reach people with similar problems..

@delishtreats yes, we must have lots of empathy for the son. Such trauma is like a pressure cooker from hell

I always want to know why people built a family and then keep hurting each other and the couple are busy with each other, fighting or loving and ignoring their children😢 if it is not physic violence there'd be verbal violence too.

Simple but strong story @joeylim 😉 still enjoy your fiction anyway and congrats for the curie picks😉

@cicisaja me too!! I think it's so heartbreaking when home, the refuge from the outside world, is also an unsafe and dangerous place ):

Thank you so much!!

I was right there
In his head
First looking at numbers
Then looking in on his Mum in the floor and Dad over her, belt in hand

Loved the way it was written but the subject matter
Ah, too many too often
Sadly it still happens in this day age

💗

@kaerpediem yes! really hope something can be done to remedy this tragedy.

Aaargh the intensity of this story makes it sound so real. Domestic abuse is that real, many times.

Congratulations of being curied @joeylim! This is so good and you are always a very gifted writer.

Hi @joeylim, how thoughtful of you to convey the message via a writingprompt. We as an outsider, we always question why the mother doesn't want to report or leave the husband. But as the victim herself, sometime i feel that because she does not have that courage to report because she depend her husband on a living. She has no income. How would she survive without someone support her living. No one advice or encourage her that, it is fine to report it and get help. A lot of society willing to help them to start a new life. She also doesn't know what would be the impact caused to the kids until one day a tragedy happen only she regret.
In your story, you have express the tragedy if no action taken on the mother side. I have read your continuation part as well. I love how you continue the story. For who read my comment, please do read @joeylim part 2 story here :https://steemit.com/flashfiction/@joeylim/harris-s-wish-continued-or-short-story, It worth the read.

Are you new in writing @joeylim? I first time came across your name in story writing because i love to read but not a writer. And I love how you deliver the story.

@oliviackl I've been writing since young, but there was a long hiatus since a few years back. Recently started again 😊 when I realised words were my thing.

I am so glad you started back your writing @joeylim. You have talent there, and yes, words is your thing. You able to pass the message through writing. And you have the writing skill to attract readers read on your story. Now you as a professional writer or write as a hobby?

I would want to write as a professional one day, but now I still have my day job.

Glad to hear that, just do it slowly. As long as you have the passion and love writing, i sure one day you will become a professional writer.
