Rhino Rules Contest #2: Animal Stories - The Discarded Puppy
Mika was happily munching on the upturned corner of carpet she had worked so hard at over the last hour. Proud of her work she crouched over the spot and relieved herself.
The TV was blaring, “Wheel! Of! Fortune!”
Bob sat in a lay-z-boy downing a beer. Mika crept up beside her master and whined.
Bob twisted his neck towards the dog, “Whaddya want!”
Mika craned her head up straining for her masters hand. Bob drunkenly got up then saw Mika’s handiwork.
“You stupid dog. That’s it, I’ve had enough, you gotta go!”
Bob grabbed his keys as Mika yelped excitedly and ran around the room. He grabbed the little puppy roughly and threw her into the pickup truck. It was a cool autumn evening. Mika propped herself up on the passenger side window to get the best view.
“Stupid dog, thought you’d be great for gettin’ me chicks but you just keep causing trouble,” Bob muttered swerving all over the road. He hit the brakes as the truck came to a screeching halt, Mika lost her balance and bounced against the dashboard.
"Dumb dog.”
Bob opened the passenger side door as Mika jumped down. She started to sniff around the grass on the side of the road. Bob got back in the truck. Tires peeled out. Mika ran after the truck but it disappeared into the night. She let out a whine then went back to sniffing. The dog walked along the side of the road, her white lab coat contrasting against the dark night.
“Daddy! Look!” the little girl yelled excitedly as she pointed to the side of the road.
George pulled the station wagon over. The little girl ran towards the puppy illuminated by the cars headlights. She grabbed the little dog and lifted it up in her arms.
“Look daddy, it’s a girl. Can I keep it? It doesn’t have any tags, not even a collar.”
“Now now Suzy don’t get your hopes up. I’m sure the dog has an owner, it must have gotten out of someone's yard or something. First thing in the morning we’ll check with the animal shelters and then we’ll see.”
“Oh okay daddy. Boy you are a cute little doggy,” Suzy said.
Getting back in the wagon Mika sat on the girls lap, panting with her tongue hanging out. Suzy kissed the dog on top of the head and squeezed it hard. George looked over at his little girl and the puppy and smiled. When they got home Suzy and Mika played in the living room. Mika had an accident on the carpet.
“Daddy, the puppy isn’t housebroken yet.”
“That’s okay sweetie, I’ll clean up the mess and you take her right outside in the backyard. You have to take puppies outside often and then they’ll get the hang of it,” George said.
That night Suzy cuddled the little dog in her little bed under a big pink frilly blanket.
“I always wanted a sweet little puppy like you,” Suzy whispered hugging the dog.
Mika let out a satisfied sigh and closed her eyes.
