The Top Virtues

in #writing6 years ago

As said before, the list of seven deadly sins does not appear in any Bible verse. But a set of sins can be found in Proverbs 6:16-19. They are the habits or things that God hates and they include:

  1. A proud look,
  2. a lying tongue,
  3. hands that shed innocent blood,
  4. A heart that devises wicked plans,
  5. feet that are swift in running to evil,
  6. A false witness who speaks lies,
  7. one who sows discord among brethren

This post is not to talk about the seven deadly sins. To find out about that check here. Today, I will be talking about the seven virtues.

The Seven Virtues
These virtues were written in and defined in a poem by Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, who was a Christian governor who died around 410 A.D. Due to the way the poem influenced most part of Europe. The following is a listing of some virtues and how they can cure each of the deadly sins:

Kindness

This is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
Since an act of kindness is a spontaneous gesture of goodwill towards someone or something - our fellow humans. Kind words and deeds come from a state of benevolence, generated by a core response deep within all of us. Therefore, kindness can cure envy by placing the desire of helping others above the need to be better than them. This is a very hard and difficult thing to do because everyone is trying to struggle on how to make it, but as you go on doing your business don forget to show a little bit of kindness.

Temperance

This is defined as moderation or voluntary self-restraint. It is typically described in terms of what an individual voluntarily refrains from doing things. It also means restraining and moderating yourself, but if you're talking about alcohol, temperance means not just drinking in moderation, it means not having it at all.
Temperance also cures gluttony by implanting the desire to be healthy, therefore making one fit to serve others. So in other to be successful, always be moderate in everything you do.

Charity

as they say begins at home. It is having concern for and habit of helping others. without charity, greed will take total control over ones life putting the desire to help others above with what you have. As the Bible says, "Love your neighbors as much as you love yourself".

Chastity

This can be known as the state or practice of refraining from extramarital, or from all sexual intercourse. This can closely be associated and referred to with sexual abstinence, especially in the context of premarital and extramarital sex.

The practice of CHASTITY/SELF-CONTROL helps in curing lust by controlling passion and leveraging that energy for the good of others.

Humility

This is ability of lowering yourself. Humility is the quality of being humble. It can also be known as a low self-regard and sense of unworthiness.

In a religious context humility can mean a recognition of self in relation to a deity (i.e. God) or deities, and self-debasement with subsequent submission to said deity as a member of that religion.Outside of a religious context, humility is defined as being "unselved", a liberation from consciousness of self, a form of temperance that is neither having pride (or haughtiness) nor indulging in self-deprecation.
Humility is the best cure for pride because it removes one's ego and boastfulness, therefore allowing the attitude of service to come in.

Diligence or Zeal

This is one of the heavenly virtues. A diligent behavior is work ethic that is always admired. Diligence can be applied in so many ways :-
In a student's life, diligence in a student is defined as an effort that is put in towards balancing and developing the mental, physical, social and spiritual dimensions. Diligence in students is considered with academic performance. The support of parents and educators encourages students to be diligent. Other factors which encourages diligence in students include motivation, discipline, concentration, and responsibility.

In Christianity, is the effort kept in doing one's part, in keeping faith and reliance in God. It can also be said that diligence and faith are two sides of a mystery. But diligence when combined with faith assures spiritual success. Diligence as one of seven virtues describes thoroughness, completeness and persistence of an action, particularly in matters of faith.

When diligence is being practiced on a daily bases, it cures slothfulness by placing the best interest of others above the life of ease and relaxation.

Patience

Patience is the ability to endure difficult circumstances such as perseverance in the face of delay. Tolerance is without replying in annoyance/anger; or forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. Patience is the level of endurance one can have before negativity. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast. Antonyms include hastiness and impetuousness.

Patience cures wrath by taking time to understand the needs and desires of others before acting or speaking.

Patience cures wrath by taking time to understand the needs and desires of others before acting or speaking. Well said! And "cures" is a great word choice here.
Charity is also a great word. It's more than just tending to those less fortunate. To be charitable also means to forgive and forbear - "cut me some slack" - hence the opening of the Rosary, "For an increase in the virtues of faith, hope, and charity."
Thank you for this excellent reminder of the virtues, not just the vices. :)

Glad that I could be of help.. Kindly resteem this so that others can gain from it
