Weekly Block Update Jan 7

This is the first of a regular roundup of news from The Writers' Block and any changes we have implemented.

Growth

Two days ago we announced we hit our first major milestone, 500 members. We experienced quite a boost when we recently affiliated with a much larger writers' group called Scribes and Scribblers. They are close to 6000 members strong, poets and writers all without Steemit accounts. There are many excellent writers and poets that could potentially add a lot of value through their Steem blogs. As they cross over into The Writers' Block we are introducing them to the platform, sharing other communities like @MinnowSupport and @MinnowUniversity to get them up to speed. Our current membership stands at 531.

Hosts

Due to our growth, we have introduced a new role, host. We have 11 moderators spread out across all timezones, but as you can appreciate, many of these are writers who need time to actually write. Others, such as @swelker101 and @Crimsonclad, are moderators in other communites, so need to also manage their time.

We called an emergency moderator meeting last night after we received a flood of new members. Many ideas were thrashed out and we concluded that a new role was required. Hosts have the responsibility of welcoming new people, socialising and finding out where they came from (Steem or Scribblers and Scribes), promoting them to Honorary Members so they have permissions to use the workshops, and deleting Steemit link drops in the general channel. They also educate new members in how we operate, our submission procedures and guide them to the appropriate workshops according to their needs.

We currently have six hosts: @AnikeKirsten, @Arrelaine13, @Josie2214, @Morodiene, @SteemedChitty and @Tanglebranch. They are doing a great job in taking some of the pressure off the moderation team.

Do you think you could be a host? We are looking to add sociable people from outside The Writers' Block to our hosting team. You do not have to be a writer to fill the role, you just need to have good people skills and a willingness to accept the hosting duties.
