Creative Writing Challenge: The Stats

in #writing7 years ago

Hello guys,
It took me few more days to accumulate all the data I wanted to present in this post.

We'll take a brief look at various curious stats. Each of you will be able to check his own data and possibly make some interesting conclusions. Some of the numbers are put just for fun.

Let's begin with:

Posts and participants

A total number of participants:
16

A total number of participants
that have submitted posts for all of the 9 challenges:
5

A total number of posts
submitted by all participants:
80

As you see, about one third of all participants have managed to finish on time.

The Great 5 Stats

Let's now take a closer look at the stats behind the work of the 5 participants that has submitted posts about all the 9 tasks.

I decided to include @cristof's stats because his numbers are impressive even though he didn't participate in Task #2. Actually his posts has the highest average number per post and he has written the most words.

A total number of hours involved in thinking, planning and writing: about 60 hours.

It's never too late to update the posts with new metrics and I'd be glad if you hint me about stats you'd like to see included here. As announced, next post will be devoted on ''the making of' the challenge and will reveal mainly some struggles I had to overcome to plan, write and publish all the tasks on time.

P.S.
I'm also happy to share that I already have ideas for 3 new tasks. I think it's worth collecting few more, write some things in advance and launch a new challenge with a slightly different approach that could make it a bit easier for me to manage it.

I think the stats are very interesting :) Also I saw that task #7 has in average the most number of words (couldn't compare it with task #9 because it doesn't show because of the length of the table). I agree with @morodiene about having more time for the tasks, at least three days. It would give you more time and it wouldn't be as time consuming. I think that maybe making a google form could help you have less work. You can make one for each task and put the link in the task post. The form could ask you your username, link of the post with the task and number of words or whatever else you need. You can close people being able to fill the form at the time you want too. That way you can check who made it and the details you need easier :)

Using a Google form is a good option indeed, however it will remove the pleasure to post the link at the comments and you'll have less exposure to external people looking at the posts comments. It should also work if I just skip the Comments & Discussion types of posts between each task and include a table with the entries from the last task at the beginning of the new task announcing post. It won't me so much time to generate the table.

We could also post the link in the comments. Your idea of skipping de comments & discussion is also a good way of making it easier for you :)

Interesting numbers. I like that you included @cristof's numbers in here too, since he was a very active participant and I'm looking forward to seeing his work in the future. For your future challenges, definitely set it up so it's easier to manage for yourself! :) It's a lot of working creating the posts, updating them, commenting, etc.

I've already started writing post templates and currently have 5 new tasks for the new challenge. I'd like to make them 9, start publishing pre-launch posts and launch it. Probably at mid-Sept.

Now I see that task #9 in the table is not visible :(

It's interesting to see the stats! I'm looking forward to what ideas you have for future challenges. This was just so much fun, but it does need to be doable for you too!

If I may offer a suggestion, I think a little more time in between each task would probably be helpful all around. I really liked having that extra time on the weekend tasks :)

Thanks @morodiene!
So, do you think 72h is better than 48h? Announcing a new task each Monday, Wednesday and Friday seems somehow rhythmical. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I think 72 hrs would be great. So Monday Thursday Saturday? Just a thought. Though I like the sound of MWF too :)

However between Thursday and Saturday there are 48 hours. It definitely sounds tempting though..

Well, nothing says we have to get it done in a weeks' time either...just keep adding 72 hours. So if you have the first on Monday, the 2nd would be Thursday, then Sunday, then Wednesday, etc. But whatever you're comfortable with, its' your contest :)

Right. I don't want to make you spend time on Sundays.

Monday, Thursday, Monday, Thursday could be a good rhythm as well.

Oh, I like that!

It will be also a filter for the people with the most serious attitude. People who are too distracted with more than 1-2 things may easily forget about their assignment with 2 posts per week. That's what I'm also thinking about, but it looks good overall.
