The Black Pond

"It doesn't matter how many times I see it, it always gets on my nerves," Said the biologist with the long mustache, also known as Dr. Miller, staring at the black waters of the little pond. "Just looking at it makes me feel like it tries to suck out my very soul."

The man waited patiently, but there was no response from his assistant. A little annoyed, He clicked his tongue. "See those weird little branches sticking out of the surface? I swear those weren't there before." Dr. Miller signaled a bunch of snake-like tentacles, writhing on the surface of the pond with his pale white finger. "The thing is changing, growing."

Thinking of that possibility, the biologist felt goosebumps all over his body but calmed down after glancing at the person beside him. Playing with his mustache out of habit, the man continued. "Not only that, just look at this whole place."

He stopped talking for a moment, admiring the surrounding scenery of the dark forest. "This place didn't use to be like this. This was supposed to be a paradise of green, but now look at it!" Agitated, Dr. Miller moved his pale skinny hands frantically, as if trying to shoo away something invisible, but noticing the strange gaze he was receiving from his assistant, soon came to a stop. Blushing a little, the biologist hid his hands in his coat.

"It's dead, the whole forest is dead." With a sorrowful gaze, He looked at the trees around him. Instead of the fervent greenery one should expect in the heart of a virgin land, only putrid vegetation could be seen. "And is all this thing's fault."

The little pond was the same as before, with black tentacles moving about on the surface, and strange vapors being expelled to the air from time to time. For some reason, Dr. Miller thought that it was gloating at him.

"I know you think this is a bad idea." Dr. Miller stared at his tied-up assistant, ignoring the extreme fear on the young girl's face. Muffled sounds came out from between her gag, and He knows She is begging him not to do it. "But there's no other way. The thing has already evolved out of control." Grabbing the helpless girl by the hair, and dragging her all the way to the border of the pond, Dr. Miller felt that the future of mankind was bleak.

Looking at the struggling girl being submerged in the black waters by a bunch of disgusting appendages gave rise to a deep sense of despair in the heart of the biologist. "I wonder when will be my turn to feed it."
