Paragraphs People! Use Paragraphs When You Write.

in #writing7 years ago (edited)
I spend a lot of time reading when I’m doing the Steemit Rambles. Nothing turns me off a post faster than people not understanding the basic concept of breaking their work into paragraphs. Not putting a line between those paragraphs is another turn off.

When writing for viewing on a computer or mobile device screen, the paragraph and the spacing is even more important. Short, two to four sentence paragraphs are easier to read. Sometimes it is hard to break the writing down to short sentences, but do your best.

Do you really want to make your readers struggle to read your post? I know I don’t. I want you to start on the first word of my post and have no desire to stop until you get to the last word. In fact, I’d love to do the same for your posts.

Writing isn’t just about how well you can put your thoughts into words. It also is about how you present those thoughts to your reader. Invite them to start at the first and finish at the end. Make it a warm and pleasant reading experience.

This post is brought to you by a curmudgeon who has seen too many posts that are painful to read. Please treat me to a pleasant reading experience.

So important, some of the newer posters have gigantic walls of text!

I've been noticing that. Hoping they will see the post and pay attention. The wall of text may be a reason why they find themselves not getting upvotes.

I'm new to the site and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of use, but slightly turned off by some of the bad writing/formatting. Good writing takes practice, but there are very simple ways -- like spacing between paragraphs and using subheadings -- to drastically improve readability. Hopefully, more new posters will read and take your advice.

We can but hope @redhens. Some of the writing is just bad and some is the result of English not being the writer's first language. Then there are native English writers who can't figure out the proper form of words.. like wait instead of weight or your instead you're ... oh don't get me started. :)

Most likely, I have advised on occasions I have seen. Its all we can do. Well apart from your fine informative post!

We can but try. What's that old saying... you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

I like the modification, someone did... You can lead a man to knowledge but you cannot make him think!
