Mass Extinction Event

in #writing7 years ago

Damn! Another mass extinction event…

He held off as long as he could. Hoping, praying that the masses would turn away from the cult. But the cult of anti-intellectualism had rooted itself too deeply into society. They pretended their system wasn’t failing. They pretended not to know about the irreversible environmental damage they were causing, the countless species they had wiped out, and all the preventable suffering that they had caused.

They seemed to believe that they were not responsible. Responsibility for them lay upon the government. Everything else was just the system which they were a part of. They pretended to be powerless to change the system, as if they were not willing cogs made out of meat pushing the failing system forward to devouring everything.

He wondered if they could see the signs of the impending doom…

Surely the out of control crisis of homelessness would trigger warning bells? But perhaps he thought, as their society deteriorated they had progressively normalised their failing society.

It was obvious to any historian what was coming next. There would be a great culling of the population, either through war or disease. Politicians were already gearing up for war to distract the cultists from the real problems they were facing. And the homeless bodies on the streets would provide perfect vectors and breeding grounds for a plague.

He knew that although the system was failing the cultists would hang onto it for as long as possible. They would bring the whole world off the cliff with them. The human race would inevitably survive this event, but what sort of world would be left?
He had no choice but to stop them taking it any further. He couldn’t convince the cultists to quit their cult so he was left with one choice; kill the humans to stop them from killing themselves.

With great reluctance he modified the avian bird flu changing two of its domains; changing only two of four domains would allow the virus to be lethal, but not so lethal as to prevent it from spreading. Getting a sample of the virus was easy. Using CRISPR to modify the virus was also easy. It was a simple solution to a complex problem. Of course he was fully aware that there were many other simple solutions to the problems we were facing, but those solutions would require cooperation. The cultists had been indoctrinated into capitalism, and only knew how to compete. They had chosen this course of action he told himself.

The virus would be transported around the globe via post. It only needed to be sent to one big city for it to spread globally. Modern transport allowed this. Over half the world’s population would be wiped out; freeing up land, resources, and jobs. The world’s infrastructure and environment would be untouched by the virus. The old would be greatly reduced in numbers, allowing the young to build the new world free from those most indoctrinated into the cult.

With sorrow he posted the letters, knowing that no one would ever know it was him. The world would believe it as a natural event.

Thank you! ^_^

sadly, somewhat believable!

Equipment to do something like this would cost a few thousand...
Getting a viral sample, also very easy.

The knowledge that technology has progessed to the point where an individual can seriously harm the world, to me it merely reinforces the need for an equitable sustainable society that works for everyone. The sooner the better.
