The Death Of The Press And The Transfer To Online.
The discussion has been going on for two decades. With the growth of the Internet and migration to digital, the paper journals and magazines were weakening without advertising revenue following the same path of transfer to online. With the revenue structure progressively shaken, the press continues trying to find a business model that fits the future. The result has been translated into successive waves of dismissals and closure of newspapers and magazines.
The media shouldn't be seen as a production line of sausages. A management that does not look at the specificity of information, emptying the newsrooms of resources and consequently of conditions for quality work, induces a cycle that is increasingly difficult to reverse. Just like any business, they are companies obliged to financial sustainability. Without financial independence, there is no editorial independence. Any realistic debate about the media crisis has to look at this assumption.
The problem, once again that is presented by the announcement that newspapers with the greatness of "The New York Times" are at risk, is that this is not a drama of journalists, even if they feel the unemployment and degradation at many levels of journalism being practiced. The problem is, first of all, the readers.
The critics of so many who daily hit the "clickbait", the growing lack of reporting as a noble way to look at the World, the lack of investigation and the emptiness of many approaches, are well deserved. When they play with the public right to information, the newsrooms must be the first guardians of the rigor and relevance in the service they provide. It is also true that many of the choices are from readers and that many of the criticisms are undermined at the beginning.
The problem is the social duty and democratic solidity. Without a strong media, we will be increasingly in the hands of Facebook algorithms and "fake news". Maybe the solution for a strong media is here, at Steemit, why not? Without the Facebook algorithms, with the "fake news" controlled by our social duty, using our biggest weapon, the Flag/Downvote.
