A GROUND-BREAKING SMILE

A sorrowful stranger met a cheerful lady in the street who dazzled and brightened his clouded countenance with beams of joyful smiles.

This refreshing smile reminded the stranger of past kindness from a distant friend, persuading him to write his friend a thank-you letter. The friend was so pleased with the letter that he gave a big pocket money to his steward.

With this money in her hand the steward stumbled on a helpless man in the street who had not eaten for the past two days and bought food for this beggar. Having fed well and regained strength the beggar left for his house which is in the sub-urban part of the town. On the way a wind storm started. In this storm the beggar met a puppy shivering with cold and he showed it concern, taking the small dog home to keep it warm. The puppy was happy for coming out of the storm.

That night this man’s house caught fire when everybody was asleep. According to Andres Lara (2003) who originated the story, the puppy barked noisily and woke up everybody in the household, enabling them to escape from the fire. One of the boys that were rescued from the fire grew up and became the president of the country.

The simple smile from the cheerful lady produced ripple effects and gave rise to a chain of kind gestures. It was an ground-breaking smile.
