Creative Writing Challenge Task 8: To a Girl of Another Time

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

Adam had already made a video to his future self. He thought he would have been married with kids sometime in the future, and his grandchildren would be able to watch what he made for his Time Capsule. But sadly, that was not to be.

Within days of filming his video came The End Of The World As We Know It. He saw in his last day that the end was here. With his cellphone battery dead, however, he could not make another video. He had used it up saying his goodbyes to all but one: the woman who would have been his wife.

He had not yet met her, but he imagined who she would have been - the kind of woman he would have wanted to spend the rest of his days with, if he had any more to spend.

So he took out a pen and paper, and wrote her a poem about what their last moment together might have been, had they met before the end.

To a Girl From Another Time

A flock of birds flew against an azure backdrop,
The calm winds aided them in their liberation.
There you sat, gazing at the treetops,
And I, gazing at you in my own evasion.
Once the love of another time.

The Rose I picked hung forgotten in your hand,
Our wine glasses stood stalwart in their vigilance,
But the bottle was finished, the vintage made bland
By the inexorable shadow of our impotence
From our life of another time.

In our days together we had grown complacent,
Expecting we would always have tomorrow,
But in our feigned ignorance of life’s assailant,
All that remained was spent joy and sorrow
With our hope of another time.

Across the horizon swept an immense darkness,
Erasing the sun, moon and stars from the heavens
Never more to be seen or witnessed,
Its the end of this world and its humble denizens,
And the girl of another time.

That's actually pretty sad, especially coupled with the intro/backstory. I like that you went the poetry angle on this particular challenge. You're a poet!

And I didn't know it! But my feet sure show it! Longfellows. :D

nice writing but I felt a little sad why

The end of the world is a bit sad, I agree.
