How I write. Lesson 4

in #writing8 years ago (edited)

Lesson 1

Lesson 2

Lesson 3

I have been asked in replies on my blogs, in chat and in person. I've been asked to give tutorials and teach people how to write. I've thought about it, I've considered it and now I've started it.

I'm not sure I can teach YOU how to write like I do, but I can tell you how I developed my own style and maybe, hopefully, that will help you develop yours.

These are my books. It took two years to write my first book - and another nine years to publish it.

When you write, you are telling a story with the benefit of being able to go back and change things, add things and remove things without losing the flow of the story because you will change it before it is ‘heard’.

This is called ‘editing’ and it benefits your story, your characters and your writing skill. Practice makes perfect and the editor is a writer’s friend, but it really is ‘Tough-Love’ if they have any kind of skill.

Don’t get into the mind-set that your editor hates you. She/he doesn’t. She/he has almost as much invested in your book as you do. Her/his name on a book that is sub-par will mean she/he doesn’t get the right exposure and may miss other work because of it.

Instead, think of the relationship as beneficial to you in more than one way. Your book is getting better and your skill at writing will get better too, if you see what is recommended and you learn from every recommendation.

Word getting around that an Editor did a horrible job on the latest release will spread faster than wildfire, believe me. And it can ruin not only a book and an author’s reputation, but also the editor’s.

That’s not to say the editor will always be right…

In my Wolf series, my editor wanted to change every ‘Wolf’ to ‘wolf’ but I didn’t want that, it fitted that the ‘Wolf’ species thought of themselves worthy of capitalisation. The same with Full Moon – in a way, the Wolves worship the Full Moon, and like Christmas, it deserved capitalisation.

Your story, your rules!

But I’m getting ahead of myself…

You’ve actually got to have a book written in order for it to be edited.

I suggest writing your story and then, if you have the luxury of time, put it away for a week, a month – 3 months. That way, when you come to look at it again, you will see it with the benefit of ‘fresh eyes’ and you will see things you didn’t see before.

Try to write your story as true to yourself as you can. I suppose that’s another way of saying ‘Write what you know’. Yet, that’s not necessarily a hard and fast rule. Get to know your characters inside-out so, no matter what situation he or she is in, you will know exactly how they will react.

For example, if your character is scared of spiders, even if he is in the presence of the love of his life and they are being attacked by spiders, he’ll not be able to:

TA-DAA! Put on his superhero cape and leap to the rescue…

He just won’t. He’ll be paralysed by his over-riding fear. So put a different danger before them, unless you want the twist of his love saving the day.

If it helps to plot your story, do that.

If you can just sit and write the story as it comes to you, without knowing where it’s going to lead, do that.

The rule is only this:

It’s YOUR story. YOU write it. YOU enjoy it.

Further down the line, when you’re a famous author with a publishing deal, you’ll get lots of restraints and restrictions placed on you – yep, all true! There may be a clause put into your contract that you deliver at least one book per year.

No bother? Are you sure? Tell me that when the deadline’s looming and you’ve got half a chapter of nothing and less than a week to write the rest.

That’s pressure. Don’t wish for it until you’ve enjoyed the pleasure of just writing your story, your way.

Back to writing then.

A cue for a story may come from anywhere – literally. I’ve just been to my physio and we’ve been chatting. We talked about films, childhood, politics and we generally put the world to rights. We also talked about how to get started on a story.

It all boils down to two words:

WHAT

and

IF

What if this happened rather than that…

What if we did this today…

What would happen if…

All great starters for a story.

Once you have a story, don’t worry whether it’s a ‘short story’ or an ‘epic novel’ – just write it. I keep saying this, but you can’t edit a blank page, there has to be something there.

What if the world came to an end tomorrow and you knew it was going to happen? What would you to today?

What if you came across a pile of treasure on your walk with the dog? What would you do, how would you let anyone know? WOULD you let anyone know?

Then, once your story gets going…

Read your story – a LOT – if you get bored as you’re creating it, just think about how that will come across to your readers.

You love this baby you’re creating, it’s your job to love it. But, if there are things that niggle at you, irritate and nag at you, then you must take a look to see why. Unless those items are supposed to niggle and irritate, you need to change them because you have a high tolerance for the worst bits in your writing, but your reader does not.

If something bothers, nags or irritates, they will be off, they don’t owe you anything.

thank you again for your lesson post....upvoted and resteemed

As to 'EDITING' :

I think your tip for a writer to go away (for a week or so), so that he/she can return with the benefit of ‘fresh eyes’ is a SOLID Idea.

Re: Becoming Intimately Acquainted with Your Characters

Then too, it's so-o-o essential to get to know your protagonist (and other characters ), so You don't make them do something that's out of character!

So I think that's a handy tip/suggestion you made - as u did here :

As u say in your sentence -- "So put a different danger before them, unless you want the twist of his love saving the day." -- good advice, to consider what FEARS the character may have.

QUESTION: Do u have specific advice as to How a #writer can create rich characters? [protagonist, espec. ]

Hi @janashby, thank you for your comments.

Ah, I think I wasn't clear. Write the story and put it away for a week. Don't look at it, forget all about it, do something else.

It's not always possible to go away somewhere quiet and peaceful to write. (I wish) :)

I'll write about the characters soon. I have to deconstruct how I do things and then write about them.

Good Question though :)

Thank u for yr kind reply.

wow ,, very beautiful,
eventually my story continues,
and my days are more beautiful, with stories from you,
it is true what you say steemit is very beautiful,
and lots of interesting information that we can get..
Thank you... @michelle.gent

that's my article today,,, "colorchallenge "special orange"

I've seen your post @blacvizz - that's certainly a bright, cheerful colour :)

thank you, you have seen and willing to give your upvote to my article,
I am very happy,
Once again, thank you so much

I want to ask you one time,
do you use steemit.chat

I'm registered there, but rarely use it.

I want to ask you about my article,
but I do not want to ask it here,
I would be embarrassed and considered ignorant, by all steemit users,
about my question to you

Hey :)

I'm afraid I can't help individually with articles. I also have a job and I write on Steemit when I'm not working.

If I helped everyone on an individual basis, I'd not get time to write, so I have to tell everyone that the only way I can help is through the articles I write.

no, no, no,..
I will not interfere with your work,
I just want to ask you a question,
how to get people interested in my article ,,,

you're a great writer,
I just wanted to ask how to get everyone interested in our articles

i read your last story i want to gift your book to my friend .most of the horror story made in night . its make a story more scary . The witching hour is traditionally understood in Western cultures to be 3 AM. It is the time of haunting at which creatures such as witches, demons, ghosts, and gremlins, and anything scary are thought to appear and to be at their most powerful. Black magic is thought to be most used at this time. Many ancient witchcraft masters, used to awake and perform spells, hexes, and other cult or satanic rituals only during this hour.....................

My IMDB

I've made a few... I've written a film script (or two). Twisted - The Devil in her Mind

true writing we can easily say things we will find it hard to say by mouth.

Yes, but the opposite is also true... it's often difficult to portray the right emotion in writing, it's better to be face-to-face under some circumstances.

i totally agree with your words ...i have been searching for different ways on internet and had found way more articles but none of them really came to workout for me.....each article on internet on how to write essay included different way of thinking and patter and different precautions too......makingf a whole bunch of confusion in my mind but after reading your stories i have found that i am inclined towards your daily stories which raged my english vocabulary and skills too..... and now that you have posted another beautiful and qualitative content on how to write stories and i am dammn sure the one who reads your article would surely improve in his english ..... i am much more thankful to you..

great work @michelle.gent

Thank you. I really do appreciate the confidence in me... I am, as they say... winging it, like most other people.

I'm worried that my work won't be well-received, or people will think it's utter rubbish, but there's nothing you can do about that, you just have to get on with it and get it done for you.

I think people that teach others have to be a special kind of person, patient and knowledgeable , as well as kind.

That's why I'm showing people how I write rather than trying to teach people how THEY should write.

I don't mind if someone just picks one piece of advice from my lessons and finds it helps their writing - I don't mind if they think: Pah! She knows nothing, I'm doing it MY way!

Good! :)

At least write, whichever way you do it... just write :)

May I ask you a question: Do you know the platform Wattpad?

I know of it...

I posted one of my short stories on there once.

Dusty the Demon Hunter

What do you think of it? Is it a good place for a writer to evolve his writing skills?

I used it once, back in 2014.

A fully edited piece of 10,000 words received 72 views, 2 stars and no comments.

No, I'm not really impressed.

I come here, to Steemit every day and I've been to the platform you mention just once since 2014 (because you mentioned it).

This platform is far superior. You can post your work AND get comments and feedback (and spam... but let's face it, nothing's perfect) - and best of all - the opportunity to make connections and get paid is very real.

I've been here a year, but I do write and post up to 5000 words per day. Every day.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I wrote there also a book and hit 40.000 views in 8 months. Then I found Steemit. Now I am here :D But here I am not writing fiction here.

May i ask how the your steemit journey was so far?

You're welcome.

My Steemit Journey... that's a whole story in itself!

Last August, I saw a post on FB telling about this wonderful new platform where it was possible to earn real money. I figured it was either too good to be true, or a brilliant opportunity, but either way, I'd never know unless I checked it out.

Still here :)

This is great :)

Thanks a lot for these lessons! Your writing is extraordinary

You're most welcome, and... Thank you!

I write nonfiction, yet I consider your tips very valuable.

Several years ago I taught day-long seminars on "Business Writing That Works." I enjoyed directing those sessions.

Thank you. I hoped my 'advice' would help people.

It's just how I do things, nothing more :)
