Jessica slipped from the trance to hear his soothing voice telling her that he was counting on her.

“I believe that you, Jessica are that balance. I think that you are capable of becoming the Prophesised One and you can take the place of the corrupt Sentinel Exemplar.”

Jessica sat still for a while and thought about the story she had just heard – or had experienced. She knew that even as recent as yesterday, if she had heard that, she would have been completely taken in but since... Since the dream last night, she knew different and she also knew that she was the chosen one but not quite the chosen one that Lord Grey had in mind.

She was stunned and silent and then she nodded at Lord Grey and said. “I won’t fail, I promise.” In a very small voice and she stood up from her chair and went straight to her room to lie down.

“Fucking Throwbacks, you can’t trust them.” Selene said. She had been watching and waiting, concealed in the stationery cupboard. She did wonder how many others had used the cupboard for the same reason and how many had used it while she was having private meetings with Lord Grey, but it wasn’t worth the worry now and she turned again to Lord Grey.

“You’re expecting me to continue with her tutoring I suppose?”

“No. You’re done with her. There isn’t much to do now anyway, at least not until it’s time to turn her. Leave her alone though, I don’t want you taking out any kind of revenge on her. You can go and do what you like now, stay close at hand, just in case.”

And with that, she was dismissed.

Chapter 12

Red was getting jittery by the end of the week and she was grateful of the offer of a good ‘blow out’ and a night on the town from Vixen – or Erzsébet as she preferred this season.

Red got ready in record time and went out to meet her friend. Erzsébet picked her up outside the house and when she had climbed in the car, she asked a question that made Red think hard before she answered.

“What’s the deal with the guy across the road? He was standing at the upstairs window as I pulled up and as soon as I looked in his direction, he dodged back. It seems suspicious to me, is he watching you for some reason?”

“He’s watching me but I don’t think he has a reason.” Red said and then told her about the confrontation of a few nights previous.

“You’d probably be best to steer clear of him; you don’t need any added complications.” Erzsébet said.

“I think I’ll just change to Wolf in front of him and scare him to death.” Red said and laughed. Erzsébet laughed along with her and that set the tone for the night ahead.

They went to ‘andwhynot’, the restaurant beneath The Late Lounge club and they enjoyed a leisurely meal. Sitting together like the best friends that they were seemed blissful to Red because she never found it easy to settle and just chat with anyone other than Erzsébet or Victoria. One was very elusive and the other was just too busy lately. Victoria had far too much on her plate to be able to go out and relax, get blitzed and dance the night away, as much as she would love to.

After their meal, they went for a walk around town to see what other nightspots there were on offer. There were pubs with music blasting out and people inside dancing and they tried a few of those.

They both enjoyed the attention they got and Red remembered the attention she’d had from one of Luke’s admirers and they laughed about that as they wandered from pub to pub, following the crowd and growing steadily more intoxicated as the evening wore on – both by the alcohol and the atmosphere.

Eventually they headed for one of the late closing pubs and decided that they would go home after they were turned out from there.

Erzsébet was happy with that plan until someone outside caught her attention as he walked past the large window that fronted the pub.

“Drink up, we’re going.” Was all she said and Red sensed her urgency and did as she was asked, and in an instant, the intoxication that both had been enjoying, dissipated.

They left the pub and went back towards where they had started their evening but they were in a far different mood than just a few short hours before. Both were on edge and didn’t realise but their footsteps made no sound as they walked, the silent gait of the hunter came natural to both females.
