“The lake” did not get the best of me that day
Views of clear waters filled with abundant life forms. Camp grounds, fresh mountain air, and sunny skies surround it. What I remembered most about “the lake”, was the summer where I was tested to swim one mile to get my swimming merit badge. I was smaller than most kids, but that never stopped me from diving into any physical challenges.
The first lap around “the lake” began with confident. After the second lap, fatigue settled in and my muscle began to strain. I fell behind the pack. By the third lap, I was struggling and compensated by trying different strokes to find the one that required the least effort. I settled with the back stroke, but eventually I had to rest and float on my back. Everyone was crossing finish line when I started my final lap. This was now a matter of survival. The rescue team saw how much I struggled and asked if I wanted to stop. “No! I will finish.” Stoke by stroke, breath by breath, and lots of rest in between, I made it to the finish line. I finished last and my time was embarrassing, but I was so happy and relieved. “The lake” did not get the best of me that day.
This is my entry into @hartfloe's 1111 WRITING CONTEST - WEEK 1 Prompt - ‘The Lake’
Great job @mellofello! You've persevered and finished the line. Your perseverance reminded me of a famous quote "I'm not here to start, but to finish the race." You are truly living to this quote.
One thing that made me curious, what are you thinking when you started your final lap? What's driving you?
Hi @tifaong. At first I felt dissapointed because I saw some swimmers finish as I was just starting my final lap. But then, I thought it would be a shame if I quit now, so I just focused on one stroke, one kick, and one breath. Then another and another. There was nothing else on my mind.
Wow, you're incredible. Your focus is amazing and your unwillingness to give up thrived. Great job @mellofello!
Thanks @tifaong. I find that it was much easier to focus and have gumption when I was younger with no responsibilities, compared to now where my mind is pulled in so many directions.

Very good post Mello. Pretty good for someone who doesn't like to write. ;)
Thanks Paula. It's not quite the caliber of writing that you are you used to producing, but it gets me by. ;-)
