“F” – Vocab-ability – A More Powerful Vocabulary (This post includes all “F” entries)

in #writing7 years ago

This post comprises all the “F” entries of the Vocab-ability series. It includes many English words whose etymology can be traced to Greek and Latin roots.

If you learn one root, you can learn, understand, and use each and every English word derived from that root. Vocab-ability is an easy-to use resource guide to help you understand those roots.

In total, this Vocab-ability post features 21 entries that begin with the letter “F."

This is a very impressive thing to put together. A great tool for esl teachers, and something fun for lovers of words (like myself). I'm a geek in this way. I go to dictionary sites and tumble down the rabbithole of words of the day. How long did this take you? HOW did you do it?

I did it thru lotsa effort, lotsa work and revision, and lotsa enjoyment. Actually, I had collected much of this , in various books and photocopies, in the early 1990s, when I was teaching advanced ESL in Japan.

Eventually, I decided to compile all the roots into one comprehensive guide, properly formatted and all. It took a few years, but it was a pleasure doing it. (Much of it on company time, granted, but I'd say that's fair.) Then I sent it off to a number of publishers, and promptly received rejection letters. (I shoulda sent them similar letters, telling them I did not need their useless services. Thank you.)

So, I published it myself. Never recouped my investment, but c'est la vie.

Long story short ... I still have the original WORD document on my Mac, so when I joined Steemit, one of the first things I decided to post was this. I reformatted it a little bit (the RED words / phrases, etc), and am making screenshots of all the entries, cuz Steemit editor kinds sucks.

Anyway, in a few months, the entire work will be on the blockchain, for perpetuity. That's just a tiny middle finger to the publishers, but it should be a great help to ESL students, teachers, and other lovers of language, for longer than those publishers will survive. Ya!

Thanks for the compliment. And I'm very pleased that you find it interesting and enjoyable. (More coming your way over the next few months.)

My comments on some F entries:

  • Fac made me laugh.... while the word "fac" read like "fak" alone.. all its uses in english words that resamble face... it reads as low "c" not hard "k"... Oh, @majes.tytyty since you're english teacher: How to call the two readings of the letter C? I know they're not called "low c" and "hard c/k".

  • Fer I didn't think words like transfer and refer are related before... Wow!!

  • Front it's amazing how God gives you things that are related in days that are related.... few days ago is the first time I knew the meaning of the word Frontier. I thought I had a vague idea about it so I didn't search its meaning before... I thought it means "gate"... it meant "border".

  • Fund is bottom... Refund? this is interesting!!

Thanks again for all those entries... You're one of the people I started to open their accounts by myself lately.... you'

By the way... I think these screenshots will be awesome if are put for download in a .zip file.

I just read this part:

I hold the copyright to the original Vocab-ability guide, which was published in 2002.

wow!! you made the original book!! and 15 years ago at that... AMAZING!!

Hi Ahmad (hope I to your name right)

"Soft C" and "Hard C." Here's a link to some details about its "C" pronunciation. http://speakspeak.com/resources/pronunciation/when-to-pronounce-the-letter-c-as-s-or-k

Note, "fac" has different pronunciations in "FACE" and "FACSIMILE." Isn't that confusing??!!!

2002 ... I didn't realize it was already 15 years ago.

Anyway, I'm glad you like these posts and find them useful. As for the screenshots, anyone can use them in any way they like. (But if they make lots of money from selling it, I might pay them a visit someday...:-))

Thanks for the new information.... 2002 I was too young at the time... ten years old to be exact... for me it feel a long time. (But the last five years feel short for some reason)

(But if they make lots of money from selling it, I might pay them a visit someday...:-))

Well, If I ever got money because of them I'll make sure I give you the higher percentage... though there's no point in trying to profit from something their original creator offered for free.

Fantastic post. As a teacher, this type of content if great to see. will check out other posts as well. Thanks alot.

Glad you like it. Are you an English / ESL teacher?

If so, this might be a great help for advanced-level students. I used to teach TOEFL and TOEIC, as well as some translation / interpretation classes. Those high-level students benefited greatly from this material.

Please use freely, and dispense freely.

Good job, it's nice to see how much you care for others.
