“E” – Vocab-ability – A More Powerful Vocabulary (This post includes all “E” entries)

in #writing7 years ago

This post comprises all the “E” entries of the Vocab-ability series. It includes many English words whose etymology can be traced to Greek and Latin roots.

If you learn one root, you can learn, understand, and use each and every English word derived from that root. Vocab-ability is an easy-to use resource guide to help you understand those roots.

In total, this portion of Vocab-ability features 6 entries that begin with the letter “E."

Sort:

It is interesting to note (with a few exceptions) that the vast majority of words in this voca-bility are identical in French and have the same meaning in French and English. However, French is a Latin language and English is a Germanic language.

Yes, great observation, Nat. As I state in the Introduction to Vocab-ability, these words have Greek and Latin roots. But these words came to English THROUGH the French Language.

After the French Normans invaded England in 1066, they ruled England for several hundred years, and as a result, the English language was changed, radically and permanently. During those centuries of Norman rule, the language spoken by the rulers, aristocrats and educated people was French, not English.

That's when all those Greek and Latin words entered the English language. Eventually, those words began to mix with the Old English (Anglo-Saxon, Germanic) words and language of the common people, giving us the great melange of words that is the English language today.

Still today, the language of the common people includes "English" words such as "eat" and "see" and "clothes." But more educated people might use the words "dine", "view," and "attire," which come from French and Latin.

eat –– dine
see –– view
clothes –– attire

Interesting! Useful to apply in my class.

Great. Please use at will, and pass it around, too.

I'm doing weekly postings, so check back next week for the "F" series.

All the best in your studies!

it's been great to know all the the vicabulary i like it , I will be looking forward for new session and will check out old one to have full knowledge

Great, I'm pleased to know that you are learning from these posts. Check out all of them.

i had check the previous post and it's very helpful im glad to have tutor like you ☺☺

Loved this post... I read a little about the "Id, ego and superego" character types... These aren't the same as the components of psyche with the same names but similar... Id the emotional character, Superego the logical one and Ego being the middle ground... Many trios in fiction can be divided like these.

Haha.. this comment was all inspired by the first entry alone.

As long as you are inspired to learn, or inspired to comment, these posts have achieved what I intended. I'm glad you found it interesting.

speaking about other entries: what you wrote about "Err" corrected a misconception I had in my mind... I thought the Err alone means Error and the words contain it are similar too it.

But now I know it means wander/stray... It's actually Errating to know that something you always thought was you had figured out, is dead wrong.

Fantastic. I'm glad you found out that you were wrong, and I'm glad that I could be involved in your learning something and correcting yourself. That's one of the reasons I am posting this guide on Steemit, and one of the reasons I loved teaching English.

Cheers!
(And keep learning. Remember, one way to learn something new is to realize that your old beliefs were wrong. Voila! New knowledge!!! Instantaneously.)
