How Does One Properly Spell Sounds, Exclamations, and Interjections: When Writing Fiction or Poetry
How Does One Properly Spell Sounds, Exclamations, and Interjections: When Writing Fiction or Poetry
By: @Lymmerik
As a writer, sometimes I run into a roadblock when I am trying to spell sounds. Like, how do you spell the sound of swallowing? Or a cough?
This one is easy enough, SMACK! The sound of being slapped across the face...
...but there are many other sounds that almost defy a construction of letters with our alphabet.
So I found this website The Editor's Blog. It is a list of the spelling of exclamations and interjections. I have used the site several times with great results in finding how to spell the sound that I am trying to describe in my writing.
There are many other sites on the Internet that also suggest ways of spelling these elusive sounds as well. But I like The Editor's Blog.
I want to spell the sound, exclamation, or interjection correctly in my stories. That way, a prospective editor will know that I know how to do it properly. In walks The Writer's Block...
I am a member of The Writer's Block on Discord. I have submitted several of my short stories for critique. I have found that the people at The Writer's Block like, @carolkean, @rhondak, @jonknight, @tinypaleokitchen, @negativer, @geke, and many others take the time out of their day to read my stories. They give excellent critiques.
If anyone there at The Block has written an article on the subject, please include a link in the comments below. It would be so helpful.
I cannot thank The Writer's Block enough for their help with my writing. They really want to see me be successful. Not only here on Steemit, but also in my novel and poetry writing. It is an honor to have these people as a resource. One day, when I become a better writer, I may try to become one of the critique team myself, who knows?
If you are a writer and have not checked out The Writer's Block on Discord, just do it!
Here is an invitation to their channel. Click Here! The Writer's Block Invitation
I feel very honored to be a part of the Block!
Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings!
Thanks for the link to a resource I hadn't found! And you can join in the critiques already and offer suggestions. Sometimes the best feedback is from a reader, not an editor... after all, the reader is the ultimate judge.
@jonknight,
You are most welcome. I have used the site several times. Maybe after the first of the year I'll come on board. Thanks for the encouragement.
