Flags of the World #20: Bhutan!

in #writing6 years ago
Hello fellow Steemians and welcome to my review of the Bhutanese flag! This is the 20th flag that I will be covering in my series to cover most of the flags of the world! We are on the 20s baby! Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayas but their size doesn't really mean they are insignificant and they get extra points for having a dragon in their flag, which is pretty cool.

Today's Flag is the Flag of Bhutan!

The flag of Bhutan is divided diagonally from the upper right corner to the lower left corner this divides the flag in two distinctive triangles, one of them yellow and the other one orange. The Druk(the Thunder Dragon) lies in the middle of the flag holding 4 jewels in its claws and its facing away from the left side of the flag.

The current design of the flag was adopted in 1969 and ratified by the national assembly of Bhutan in 1972.

Meanings

The yellow stands for civil tradition and the temporal authority embodied in the Druk Gyalpo (The Dragon King of Bhutan) which is always has to be wearing some sort of yellow garb, usually a scarf.

The orange stands for the Buddhist traditions of the country especially the Drukpa Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Buddhism.

The Thunder Dragon is there spreading over equality over the two colors in the middle of the flag signifying the equal importance of the meanings behind the flag and evoking a sacred bond between the sovereign and the people. The white color of the Druk signifies the purity of thoughts and deeds that unite all the diverse peoples of Bhutan.

The jewels represent the wealth of the Bhutanese peoples and the dragon mouth signifies the willingness of the people to defend their lands and their commitment to the deities.

Other Flags!

The first flag of Bhutan adopted by the country in 1949 after the signing of the Indo-Bhutan treaty that made Bhutan a protected state of India, emphasis on "protected" and not "protectorate" of India.

This flag is an alternate version of the current flag of Bhutan, the only difference is that the dragon is rendered on a different art-style.

Facts

  • The name Buthan means The Land of the Thunder Dragon, how amazing is that? the name comes from the thunder storms that strike the region.

  • Bhutan was the last country in the world to adopt television and the internet, they had a ban of both these services until 1999.

  • The country was effectively closed off to the world until the mid seventies, when in 1974 they started allowing tourist to come in after a more liberal king ascended to the throne.

I've tried to paint Chinese dragons for a while and they're very charming :) I love their long bodies and funny faces with moustaches.

This one has a silly moustache too 😎

Dragon? Reptilian nation spotted!

Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.
