Prayers

Boarded a cab on my way home from a two hour fast craft trip from Tagbilaran City, the cab halted for a few seconds as a random man passed in front of us while the traffic lights show green, I looked at my left, I was seated at the back of the driver's seat though and spotted a chubby young man standing, hands clasped into each other, improper standing position I may say. He was wearing a tank top and board shorts, his head facing down but I couldn't quite figure out if he had his eyes closed or the other way around but I bet he was praying. We were at Sto. nino church by that time.

Fire flame dancing in the music of the wind as the man continues to stand there, still and calm. An old lady stood beside him, she turned her head left to right as if looking for any other person to join the young man. She was holding in her hands the familiar red wax formed into the elongated material with a cloth tip. She offers it to random people passing by even to motorists and cab drivers alike. Yet for the time being, only this young man headed her creed.

These things went into my mind:

How come this unscented, red or maroonish in color, elongated yet thin wax stick molded into this thing called candles help this young man's prayers?

Realization hit me in the face, the things which we as humans do just so we could attempt to save ourselves, perhaps to help us with our needs and dreams, our aspirations and goals.

What sacrifices do we have to do to get what we want?

We turn to prayers all the time. But why do we have to do more than we were asked to?

This realization moment turned my smile into a curve facing down. It felt like we humans are doing more than what we are asked to do. While the Maker asks us to only submit ourselves with pure hearts, we turn to adding more unnecessary things.

Colored candles they say are paid for several prayer categories.

Why do we put the Maker in a box like how the human brain works? Our Maker hears your cry and prayers without the flames of each candle burnt into infinity. The candles melt and scents say bye, how sure are you that your prayers are heard?

Why do we put the confidence of each prayer into the wax sticks rather than the faith we hold on? Is it because we have no faith at all in the first place?

Humans are funny!

Great post. I love to pray.

Humans are indeed very funny.
We have faith, but fail to believe.
And logic, but fail to understand.
We were made from perfection, but remain imperfect.
Such is the nature of humans.

Those candles really do catch the eye.
