Love and Beer During The Apocalypse

“Copulation for procreation is one thing, it’s a physical need. A drive. All species must continue the race, right?”

“Of course,” Lovejuice agreed, “but I’m talking about love. You know, that drive to keep searching for a lifemate- a partner, even after suffering the devastation of a broken heart, the whole love thing.”

Q thought for a moment. “Well,” he took a swig from his bottle, “I think it’s this need to have one person in this world. You know? One person that cares for you, and accepts you unconditionally. Just one person who belongs to you, to make you know that you’re not alone in this world.”

Solo jumped on the couch beside her and nuzzled her arm. She mindlessly stroked him and he settled on her lap, vibrating his pleasure unabashedly.

Lovejuice shook her head. “I think in a hundred years humans will have done away with that. It’s just not necessary for human survival-“

“But the only other ways we get those hormones,’ Q interrupted, “those feel good chemicals, are from street drugs, Love! How will evolution take care of that? Put heroin in the water?” He stared deep into her eyes, challenging her.

The party was peaking. Lovejuice became aware of the hum; the symphony of voices dancing together, through each other, swirling and flowing. It was a pleasant, comforting sound. But as her ears attuned further from Q’s conversation and mingled with the crowd’s, she was suddenly conscious of something else. Something… not quite right.

Solo opened his drowsy eyes and stiffened in tune with Love’s awareness.
She noticed a gathering outside on the deck. They were all looking up.

As if reading her mind, Solo jumped off her lap and scurried off, tense and unsure.

Love placed her hand on Q’s thigh and stood to follow her curiosity. Q followed.

The cool night air should have caressed her, but it sent a foretelling shiver as she immediately saw what had the growing crowd captivated.

It should have been loud for how large it was, but it’s silence was a deafening cliché. It appeared black in the filtered pre dawn light, and moved through the sky with an unnatural yet confident lethargy. It was smooth, and she wasn’t good at measurements but she figured it was six hundred feet long. Her gaze followed the others’- there were more.

They moved ever so slowly over the valley.

The world was loudly void of sound.

Love felt her senses at full alert, standing ready.

She automatically walked inside. More people went out on the deck.

She couldn’t see Q, and no one she asked knew where he was. She checked the living room, noted the bathroom was empty, and went to the kitchen.

She spotted him going down the stairs and followed.

“Q?” She called from the bottom of the stairs. He was heading for the street. He heard her and shuffled faster. She noticed he had a case of beer under each arm.

“Q!” She ran to catch him.

He slowed and turned toward her as she neared, still moving toward the street.

“What are you doing?” She asked.

He pointed his chin at the large craft hovering above them.

She had no words. “Are you- you’re taking my beer?”

He kept his pace. Over his shoulder he said, “sorry hun. Gonna need the beer.”
