A Man Is Thirsty

in #writing9 years ago (edited)

A man who finds himself stranded in the middle of the desert only has two choices: stay at the risk of helplessness, or move on in search of a way out. In contrast to modern times, a man can stay put in the comfort of his home with necessities arriving at his doorstep. When he goes out, he has to deal with the inconvenience of accidents, speeding tickets, and people trying to push their beliefs on him.

But this will never stop his impetus for adventure. He goes out regardless, just like the rest of the world, winging it just like everyone else. Results vary. What does he seek and why does he find a need for motion? Perhaps a personal sense of movement is all he needs. He seeks knowledge. He seeks to understand. He earns money to keep his crowns and calories in check. He socializes to pass time and to leave his mark in others. He steps out the door to find the proverbial oasis.

He steps out, braving the elements - dissecting every shape, form, and perspective.

In his little skirmishes and shenanigans, he began immitating certain activities as he involved himself in the lives of others. Work. Love. Cats. Families. Babies. He stopped to think. Why babies? He rolled out his trusty pen and a piece of paper, scribbling out arrows and boxes that resembled a logic diagram. He concluded that babies are there to extend the lineage of families, hurtling generations after generations into the future. But does it stop there? The whole scenario screamed "So what?".

He further concluded that making babies is certainly signing up to participate in mankind's unspoken project. Civilization. But he did not find any concrete answers as to why most people want to have babies. Answers differ wildly, and what most of his peers did certainly did not resonate with his conclusions. Not a single person with babies actually thought about it that way, and there seems to be a disconnect between their activities and reality.

Is it all just for a sense of progression? Mankind has always been winging it afterall, telling its offsprings to go figure it out for themselves. Just like his position, just like anyone's position. Disparate with no cohesion. Dissatisfied with his place in the desert, he began his journey to inspect civilization itself in hopes to produce a book that would become his life's work.

But first, he needs to get laid.

Dude! This is awesome! You're a great writer. Keep up the great work. I would say that I felt the same way as you did about children. I'm guessing you're pretty young. What I've noticed (I'm now 34) is that when you're young your attitude is, "What's the point of kids? I have my whole life ahead of me, I have a career to think about, I have grand ambitions to consider." I would argue these are beliefs that largely come from our culture. Our culture wants us working, not reproducing. The only value our culture has for offspring is tax revenue, which just isn't compelling. So anyone smart goes, "Why the fuck would I do that." Then you spend some time in the world, you gain a little wisdom and your perspective changes. Most people wind up in trivial careers working ordinary jobs and that is totally fine. Everyone who has a child is participating in an extraordinary experiment and they know it. We only hear about the bad days and we fixate on the people who do it badly, but everyone I know who is intelligent and successful (ironically now the people least likely to have kids) and who has kids loves having them and obviously views them as far more important than their careers (and the people I know have achieved a level of success few can dream of).

Haha thanks for the long post! I guess most of us go through the same phases :)
However, coming from an asian culture, it's pretty much both ways - we are encouraged to work and reproduce at the same time xD

#masculinity - we often have to remind ourselves that we're the tree, not the squirrel. Thanks for posting this.

no problem! ;)

Well said, the tree not the squirrel!

I love your writing style, it reads like a poem! A very beautiful and deep story

Thank you! I'm still pretty poor with my use of past/present tense (I think that's what you call it - still not very well versed in the lingo). Working on it :) thanks for the compliment
