Private Lies Part 52 Star picks up Hailey's Trail

Brad tromped on the accelerator, pushing the SUV’s speedometer needle past the 150- kilometer mark. His gaze was fixed on the notch near the edge of the black ridge directly ahead.

The freeway stretched out straight as a die and when he focused on the ridge looming before him, he felt as if he were at a dead standstill, but a sidelong glace at the blurred gravel on the roadside told him otherwise.

He had struggled all week to push aside his worries about Hailey. If he hadn’t volunteered to lead the training session, he’d have left earlier in the week when his call to her wasn’t returned.

Why didn’t he follow up? He winced at the thought, because he already knew the answer to that.

Three failed relationships in the last two years had left him feeling gun shy—he just didn’t know if he could stomach another rejection.

Most if not all the breakups occurred not because of him per se, but ‘as a result of circumstances beyond his control’—that was how he phrased it when friends would ask—just what that meant was another matter.

Two of the girls had found his work schedule too frustrating—all too often he would have to beg off attending events—one of them involved his being an usher at a wedding and the other was a Valentine’s disaster.

When he finally thought he’d end up a bachelor, along came Lorraine—a beautiful, petite coed he met in a night school class and he hit it off with immediately.

He loved everything about her—her laugh, her interest in his work—even the red highlights in her chestnut hair. There was only one problem: Star.

For some inexplicable reason, Star loathed her.

Lorraine tried, even went beyond trying, in his opinion, to get Star to like her. She bought him treats, fussed over him and even took him to the dog park—nothing worked.

Star would eat her tennis shoes, nip at her ankles and on a few occasions he leaped up and knocked her down—once into a mud puddle ruining a brand new outfit.

They broke up for a week and then tried again, but Star was adamant—the girl must go—and ultimately, to Brad’s dismay, she did.

He passed a green sign warning his turnoff was 2 kilometers away. The anxiety in his gut turned to fear.

As much as he had tried to take things slowly with Hailey, he knew from the moment he saw her, she was the one—and surprisingly, Star agreed.

Star wasn’t the type to fawn over people or show much affection, even to him—but with Hailey, it was different.

With her, even from the start, he seemed to assume the role of protector. She was his property and he would follow her, sit at her feet and stare at her for hours.

He was glad he had Star with him—if anyone could find Hailey, it would be him.

In minutes, he was accelerating up the winding road toward the park entrance.

He almost missed her SUV pulled over into some bushes by the roadside, but thankfully, even in the failing light, he spotted the U of T parking decal on the window.

He slammed on the brakes and reversed, parking in front of her vehicle.

He jumped out and let Star follow. Star went immediately to her SUV driver’s door and began sniffing and whining.

Brad reached into the back of his vehicle and brought a rope, a flashlight and his pistol.

Star was dancing and circling in anticipation.

“Find her, Star,” he commanded and Star set off toward the brush on the opposite side of the road.

Brad hurried to keep pace and keep him in sight.

I like this chapter its has an element of relieve for me, talking about all the love stuff, made me forget a bit of Hailey's woes

Good observation - Shakespeare did this in his tragedies - he'd interrupt the tragedy with a comic scene or a lighter incident to give the audience some relief.

Yes thats comic relief, i tend to even use it in my poems, you did it well here

Sometimes dogs know more than we do, like who is right and who is wrong for a person. Now we need to hope Star gets there soon enough. I am concerned about the selected picture though, that it is going to be a close thing, the gun just laying there on camo cloth; Who's camo?, this does not bode well.

It's actually Brad's gun, but unfortunately, the realistic outcome is not always the happy ending- Hailey has certainly had her share of unhappiness though

I knew it! Star to the rescue...

He really loves her - and Brad too, lol - at least he has a gun :)

A just where would star pack his pistol? lol

I could see him packing heat LOL!!
