Sometimes I want to say, Just Shut Up.

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

Ever felt like you know more than the person arguing about XYZ across the room?

How about on Social Media?

I am going to tell you that arguing gives me hives.

Literally.

I will whelp up and shut down.

Almost the same response I get when I am exposed to shrimp.

I have a shrimp allergy.

I developed it later in life... not sure why, except maybe I didn't eat shrimp until my 30's.

But dang... it can just be cooking in the same room and if the steam settles on my skin, POOF!

Itchy Itchy Itchy whelps will appear.

With each occurrence, it gets worse.
I know by this response to not take it lightly and I will sometimes leave the area.

This is also a similar my response to arguing. I am not a fan of it.

Lets clarify a few things...

Arguing is Not Debating
Debating is not Arguing

Arguing is a state in which two or more people are trying to force the opposing view to believe their point of view.
Arguers will not accept the opposite point of view, hear out any explanation, or consider any facts/history/prior self knowledge presented.

Debating is a state in which two or more people offer facts, history, and prior self knowledge to a civil conversation. The opposing side will allow conversation to flow, without trashing the view of the opposite side, and will on occasion see the points made were valid and take it into consideration.

If your opposing side is there to hear your side, then you have a debate.
If your opposing side is there to prove you wrong,perhaps there will only be an argument.

In most cases, I choose to just shut up. It saves me from the shrimp hives.

I enjoy debates but I cannot stand arguments. In debates, both parties desire to come to know the truth and are willing to defer to the evidence wherever it leads. Arguments are just about winning your point, no matter if it's true or not. Just win. Ugh. @ironshield

Exactly my point. .... I’m tellin ya... hives!!

I'm with you on that one - I really hate arguing and I'm not good at it - I tend to shut down only to think of responses later when it's too late.

I do too. I don’t just want to “win”.... I expect a person to listen to what I have to say, take it into consideration, and allow me to have the same respect for their words.

@jeejee

Great distinction between constructive debates and arguing. Keep pressing forward and keep Steeming!

Thank you @sumatrante

I am all about learning... just not from hate. or Control. Or belittling or bullying.

Steemin' on,
@jeejee

I get really frustrated with people, whether they agree with me or not, for being unwilling to at least try to understand why someone sees things the way they do. I think we're really just made of our experiences, and those experiences give us our point of view. When we understand why someone sees things from the perspective they do, it's easier to have discussions rather than arguments. Also, through understanding why people hold their particular point of view, it helps me to know who they are, not just what they believe, and it helps me to love them. And love is kind, it doesn't argue and bicker.

Yes ... a thousand times over, YES!!
Love is patient and kind.

This is the best explanation.

@jeejee

I have learnt to take a deep breath and reserve my 'comments' when it comes to arguing/debating. Its all about choosing which battles are worth fighting.

Sorry about your shrimp allergy, wanted to make a shrimp joke but it's too soon.

LOL... its never too soon.... and you are right about choosing your battles.... that is wise.

@jeejee

Helo @jeejee Thank you for supporting into my blog. And i thought to support you too here. Lets continue supporting each other.

Love,

Helo @jeejee !
Glad you supported me on my post. And I thought to support you here too. Keep steeming and lets keep supporting each other. Thank you! 😘

Love,
@zhayie03

If we don't support the new members here on Steemit, then the platform would not be beneficial to anyone long term. Supporting the newest members is beneficial for everyone, in my opinion.... plus, I was new at one time and it is always nice to have the encouragement!

@jeejee

I've never made the distinction like that before. For me an argument is just a passionate conversation until it breaks down into a fight. Fights are disturbing. Those are definitely win/lose. But I enjoy discussions with opposing views. Owning a haunted house puts me in a position to have a LOT of arguments that I like to turn into discussions. People find that they don't disagree as much as they thought they did and I feel good about that. I'm so sorry to hear about your hives. That would make me crazy. @Lahvista

Haunted house?! yikes
I forgot about that.
Your paranormal blogs are truly interesting.

I don’t like conflict. I suppose that is the bottom line. If the discussion can stay civil, I’m all about it.

@jeejee

Hey! I found you on Sola and am having fun perusing your steemit. this is a good little article. It's not just arguing and it's not just face to face. I wish most humans would speak less in general. I was once told by a spiritual guide that we have 2 ears, 2 eyes and 2 nostrils but only one mouth. There's a reason for that.

@movement19

I totally agree!!

I’ll follow your Steemit profile ... Sola is getting frustrating with all of the sensorship and rules. It’s so much more happy here on Steemit!

@jeejee

really? i don't see any censorship there. Haven't had any problems.

I know several who have been banned for silly reasons. They say they were “spamming” but they weren’t.
I’m glad you haven’t had any issues!
