The woods

I used to live in a house near the woods and my mother always used to repeat the same thing over and over every day: “When you go out to play, don’t you ever, ever get near those trees.” I didn’t think much of her warnings and I also didn’t have a desire to go in there anyways. There were stories of children gone missing in the forest and the entire area just seemed wrong. I don’t know any better way to describe it than that. Sometimes I could swear there were voices coming from deep in the woods, sounds of laughing children, but they never sounded sinister. They were actually quite pleasant and genuine which made it even weirder. As time went by, the voices got clearer and I could hear other children, calling for me, asking me to come and play, convincing me they only want more company. It didn’t take long before my curiosity got the best of me. I was a lonely child, no friends, no people that cared for me other than my parents and I was desperate to meet someone, even if it meant going into to the darkness. The voices promised me everything I’ve wished for, daring me to cross the line and join them. And now there is no going back. I think something bad happened to me when I entered the woods since I can’t remember anything. The only thing I know is that now I never feel hungry, friendly children are always around willing to play, but I get sad because I can’t cross the line back to my house and see my parents. Sometimes my mother still comes searching for me, but for some reason she can’t see me and she always leaves crying. I feel really bad, but there is nothing I can do, because now I live in the woods near my house forever.
