Day 712: 5 Minute Freewrite: Wednesday - Prompt: baby talk

in #writing5 years ago

The Hamiltons of Tinyville, VA did not have a television in their home and did not need it. Captain Ironwood and Mrs. Agnes Hamilton had 11 children, including four sets of twins. All of the sets of twins were still at home at the time that Captain Hamilton switched over from active duty to the Army Reserve, and then took the job as police captain in his small hometown in Lofton County, VA.

The Hamiltons had enough to do in watching their children in general, but they caught up with the major news on their biggest laptop at the end of every day, while their youngest children, 15-month old twins Ira and Agnew Hamilton, played on the floor or in the bed with them.

On this particular day, Captain and Mrs. Hamilton watched their two sons talking to each other, using all the language skills they had the advantage to get because their parents and seven siblings at home were always talking to them. Their personalities very much reflected their parents, so it was fun for the parents to watch their two boys – Ira the “New Yorker” and Agnew the mellow “country boy” – doing their best to imitate the conversations their parents had. It was super cute, but also thought-provoking.

On this particular day, as Captain Hamilton got up and put the laptop away after he and Mrs. Hamilon had taken in the day's news, he shook his head.

“What's wrong, Woody?” Mrs. Hamilton said.

“It just dawned on me, Aggie … what a country Ira and Agnew are going to have to grow up into. Just look at them...”

Captain Hamilton climbed back into bed and sat by his wife as their two sons played and talked to each other as only babies can...

“You know what the difference is between the nonsense Ira and Agnew talk to each other and what we just heard on the news?”

“What, Woody?”

“Ira and Agnew will mature and grow out of theirs, and also learn how to get over disagreements without hating each other and seeking to kill each other. I don't know about us grown folks in this country.”

“Yikes, Woody, that's scary...”

Great story. Funny and thought-provoking.
Without adult intervention, children can provide the best examples of loving harmony.
Far from learning from them we insist on imposing our corrupt and corrupting failed conflicting mentality

We are rather insistent, sad to say, but that is why those of us who write having to keep provoking thought, and doing right by the children and young people ... thank you for reading!
