I'm writing a post-apocalyptic comic book about a vigilante Luchador wrestler with one leg!

in #writer8 years ago (edited)

That's right. I am. Well, not just me.

El Marvo is a brand new comic book from the Hawk & Cleaver team, written by Luke Kondor and myself with art by Dan Butcher.

We’re currently working on bring issue 1 to life - here’s the cover for that which was put together by the exceptionally talented Will Robson with colour work by Vincent Cyril – amazing.

WHAT?

In the distant future, nuclear war and disease has ravaged the planet once called Earth and all that is left alive of the damaged and often horribly mutated human race live on a singular continent called Muck, where they worship Sokrates - a dictator whose rule has enslaved many and is using up all that is left of the lands resources on hideous weapons, physically altered beasts and super-soldiers.

Luchador wrestler vigilante El Marvo awakes from a selfimposed cryo-sleep with a fractured memory and a missing limb, hell-bent on piecing together his past and taking on the evil oppressors of Muck with the help of a pair of teenage heroes – Go Get ‘Em Girl and Knuckle Duster.

Pretty cool, huh?

WHERE?

Muck is basically the planet gone to shit 200 years in the future – no borders, no governments, no law. Just one big continent built up of various colonies - mutants, scavengers and mercenaries, would-be empires led by genocidal maniacs – you know the drill. Think the postapocalyptic world of Mad Max and Fallout but populated by a cast of heroes who wouldn’t be out of place in a modern day superhero movie franchise.

WHO?

EL MARVO (FERNANDO SANCHEZ)

A Luchador wrestler vigilante, daubed in red and yellow, his face covered by a mask. His right leg is missing from the knee downwards but has been replaced by a steampunk style prosthetic. He’s the vengeful type, and after awaking in a strange future world after two centuries of cryo-sleep, he’s pissed. Wouldn’t you be?

KNUCKLE DUSTER (IBRAHIM GREYCLOUD)

Ibrahim is a kid out to prove his worth to his father, the leader of a colony that is going up against the evil rule of Sokrates. When he meets El Marvo, his purpose becomes clearer and he adopts the persona of Knuckle Duster, a tech-savvy brawler.

GO GET ‘EM GIRL (MADELINE MOONSHINE)

Madeline has a personal vendetta against the dictatorship of Sokrates after her brother is murdered by one of his goons. Teaming up with El Marvo and Knuckle Duster, she vows to take on the oppressive force and free Muck from its grasp. She’s a scrappy girl with a slight disfigurement on the right side of her face, her weapons of choice a meat cleaver and machete in the other.

ORIGINS OF PROJECT

The project started way back in the year 2000-2001, written and drawn by myself. It was a straight up Spider- Man rip-off, drawing influence from almost every major Marvel property. There was a clichéd origin, a few knockoff villains, a love interest and a catch phrase – all pretty basic stuff. But I kind of fell in love with the idea of creating an original superhero property with El Marvo, so my Hawk & Cleaver colleague Luke Kondor and myself put our heads together to tell a new, totally different story with the Luchador warrior.

WHAT’S NEXT?

We’re aiming to fund the first issue with a Kickstarter campaign and hopefully tell the first arc of the story over a 4/5 issue mini-series. We’ll announce more details of this when we have them!
