World Wrestling Championship: Bajrang, Ravi's throat bronze medal, Sushil returned empty handed
India's wrestler Bajrang Punia, who was disappointed by the loss in the semi-final, has a bronze medal in the World Wrestling Championship on Friday. Following the footsteps of Bajrang, Ravi Dahiya, who landed in this big tournament for the first time, has also won a bronze medal. Two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar, however, missed the Olympic quota with the medal.
Asian champion Bajrang defeated Mongolia's Tulga Ochir 8-7 in the bronze medal match of the 65 kg weight category.
In the semi-finals, Bjergang was defeated after scoring 9–9 and after that he expressed his anger at the umpiring.
On this, Yogeshwar Dutt, the Guru of Bajrang and who won the Olympic medal for India, also expressed his displeasure.
At the start of the bronze medal match Barzarag was however behind. Ochir took them out, taking two points and then taking four points via chest throw to take a 6–0 lead over the barrens. Bajrang, however, took two points to take the score to 6-2.
After this, Bajrang raised his number of points to eight with consecutive points. Here the Mongolian player took a point but Bajrang maintained his lead and won the bronze.
This is Bjrang's third medal in the World Championships. He won the bronze in 2013, but then played in the 60 kg weight category. In the 65 kg category, Bajrang won his first medal last year, which was a silver medal.
Ravi went on to win 6-3 against Iran's Reza Ahmadali.
Ravi played with moderation while waiting for the chance to score. He hit back at Reza, scoring two points in his account. Reza opened his account after a while with a score.
Here Ravi was in danger that Reza would not be able to equalize but Ravi again played the old Daw to make the score 4-1. Iranian players, however, were challenging Ravi. He again harassed Ravi, taking two points. Meanwhile Reza also got hurt.
There was only a few seconds left in the match. Shortly before the end of the match, Ravi took two points from take-down to take the score to 6-3 and retained his bronze medal.
Eight years later, Sushil, who was competing in the World Championship, also had medal hopes but this veteran wrestler disappointed. The Indian lost 9–11 against Khadzimurad Gadhayev of Azerbaijan in the first round of the 74 kg category.
After this, it was expected that if Gadhjev reached the final, Sushil would get a reprieve to play the repechage, but the Azerbaijan player was defeated by Jordan Burogs of America by a big margin of 8–1 in the quarter-finals and with this Sushil's exit.
