Bindweed (Convolvus arvensis) - A natural laxative

Bindweed or morning glory (Convolvulus arvensis) is a plant species, native from Europe and Asia.

It is a perennial herbaceous climbing or creeping, which can be up to 2 m. The leaves are arranged in spiral shape varied, 2-5 cm long, 1-3 cm with a stem.

The flowers are trumpet-shaped, 1-2.5 cm in diameter, white or pale pink, with five radially dark stripes.

In Romania is found throughout the country, in the plains and hills, the weed of crops, meadows, roadsides, near the beach, etc.

The plant has uses in medicine since ancient times. For example, the Greek physician Dioscorides suggested that the plant internal bleeding stops and helps the healing of wounds that by 1700, it is described as a purgative and effective plant and used in combating fever.

Turkey used as a spice and vegetable roots in the Arab world and its leaves are still used as hemorrhage and laxative.

In the US, an herbalist from 1870 assign laxative proprieties and Navajo Indians used as a remedy for spider bites and as an incentive gut.

In some cultures in South America roots and leaves were considered laxative and stimulating properties of the spleen.

On the other hand, in the UK the plant is treated completely differently. In some regions, many believe that if a woman gather it, her boyfriend dies and other people say is associated with thunder, there is the belief that if it is collected will appear the thunder.

In our culture, there are many legends about bindweed, both in folklore and literature, with poetry Alecsandri even so called it "Legend of the Swallow".

  • The plant contains the following substances: resins nature glycosides, convolvulina, jalapina, tannins, vitamin C, minerals.

  • Its healing properties are laxative and purgative depending on the dose, choleretic, cholagogue, depurative.

  • Bindweed is part of the laxative teas and liver.

Therapeutic use : gastrointestinal disorders, constipation, biliary dyskinesia, cough - in the form of plant powder, an infusion, a tincture.
External use: - fresh leaves - abscesses, burns, boils, wounds - as direct applications.
