Thoughts on working remotely
I recently read an article regarding different remote offices locations and the idea that some people have that working from the beach is their dream. I've been working remotely for over 4 years and there are a few things that get in the way to have the best experience ever. I could possibly work from very remote locations but to be honest high speed internet isn't highly available outside of the Metro area. I really would love to live in a van a work remotely with awesome locations within my country but that is not very easy to achieve. A couple days ago we had a great conversation/discussion with coworkers working remotely and there was a guy saying how bad living near the sea has affected his laptop.
I do love the freedom that working from home gives me and to be honest I appreciate more the few days I visit the office for certain activities, but working from home is better than really being a digital nomad.
Work from home set up, I built my own standing desk.
A few advantages of working remotely:
- I do not have to commute
- I have more spare time (because of reason one, which has improve my life style by allowing me do more exercise and reduce stress of driving and being stuck in traffic jam)
- Reliable internet that is just for me ( at the office is faster but it is somehow shared and not as stable)
- Music all day long (without headset)
- Flexible schedule
A few disadvantages:
- I often tend to do more house chores while I work (which is fine) but it also extends my working schedule few hours.
- When there is a blackout or internet is unstable I have to move to the office. ( It has happened to me twice but in the worst moments ever)
- People think that you are not working or not doing serious stuff just because you are at home. I've even been asked if I have a job.
Other than thatI really like working from home specially because I can set up my waking hours, exercising, enjoy the set up I've done in my house and pretty much be efficient most of the time. I miss the interactions with coworkers but there is also the a drawback in performance given that some times they will come to ask for help and there is a slowdown in my own performance. Going to the office is very different now, as there is a high chance you will be there alone and that also makes going to the office awkward and you would rather be at home.
I do intent to keep working from home and if I managed to get a cabin built in a piece of land I own in the country side I would love to work from there, but the difference will not be in the work from home experience but more on the experience I could enjoy after working hours, like walks or visiting the lake to get some fishes. Ideally your working from home set up should be the same, reliable and stable every day, I guess I won't feel happy not really knowing how stable my set up would be the next morning after driving for the afternoon and early evening, the uncertainty would kill me and stress me out just like being late and stuck in traffic.
Have you work from home? Have you work remotely? Are you a digital nomad? Do you live in an alternative housing unit? Do you want to do any of the previous question? What is the require set up for you to properly perform you tasks or work?
