Fixing a Fence - Transformational Work gives real pleasure

in #work8 years ago

Among the pruning and the mulching, there are other exciting jobs that we can do to quickly increase the visibility of our presence here. Certain jobs are just more outwardly present, and fixing this fence is one of those.

After pruning the bushes behind the fence, which were overgrown and overhanging, we turned our attention to the fence itself. Upon driving up one day, we spotted a chipmunk, who seemed certain that if he didn’t move, we wouldn’t see him. After laughing and taking several photographs, we did get closer and he ran off.

We restacked the timbers, ran long screws and reorganized the rocks, and the results are fantastic! Check out the video for commentary, but now the only thing left to do around the fence is finish layering the soil with several inches of chipped woody debris, which we call mulch.

God Bless you all!

I agree, I love transformational work! It feels so good when you can admire what you accomplished.

I love the ninja chipmunk. Once in the mountains, we encountered one who was totally comfortable with humans, because he was hanging out at a popular lookout point on Trail Ridge Road. He'd come up to you to see if you had snacks. I'm guessing all the tourists feed him regularly. ;)

Yesterday I cleaned up my balcony garden, and planted three tree seeds in pots outside so they can stratify there this winter and hopefully sprout in the spring: two acorns, one from an oak in Congress Park and one from an oak planted in one of the new developments a half mile away from me (they had SO MANY ACORNS as I was walking past, it must be that time in the cycle for them; oaks have some years with abundant acorns and some years without), and I think but am not 100% certain yet that the berry I planted was from a hawthorn. I'll have to go back with my ID book and check the leaves to the pictures. I've admired these trees for ages but I just never for sure ID'd them before and now I feel silly. It's weird how we can pass something a thousand times and not examine it more closely. Bad druid! I have a habit of naming the trees myself when I don't know offhand. Like I call these one trees "bean trees," because their seed pods look like giant mutant green beans. They're really "Chinese-somethingorother," planted here by landscapers but not at all native to Colorado, but to me they're bean trees. ;)

Thank you for this awesome comment! I also feel like the more trees I learn to identify, the more I notice that I should know, but don't.

There are just a ton of trees! But they are all great friends and I feel like they are worth getting to know.

I am excited to see those seeds develop! Seeds have all the energy of the universe ready to grow into a wonderful tree!

Keep up the wonderful energy :)

Exactly. I am getting better at identifying trees, but I feel like I should know way more. Urban, modern life. What's that statistic about Americans recognizing more brand logos than plants?
Thank you for showing us your great outdoors!
