Making a Bowsaw, Part 3, Cutting a Tenon

The handle attaches to the cross brace with a mortice and tenon. The tenon is purposely cut a little loose and the shoulder is curved to allow the handle to pivot slightly as the blade is tensioned.

I just use the width of the mortice chisel to mark the width of the tenon.

I use dividers to mark the curve of the shoulder, with a matching curve on the handle.

Cut on the waste side of the knife line.

Cutting the curve is a little trickier. Rough with the saw.

Then trim with a chisel.

Again, the tenon is cut a little short to allow some movement.

Next time I will show you how I cut the matching mortice in the handle.

Thanks for sharing these with us. I did a furniture course a few years back but since haven't made anything. I need to try again! haha Keep up the good work :)

Thanks, yeah, get back into it, I would love to see some pictures of what you build.

That curved shoulder is such a nice detail.
