Hanging Oak Slab Flower Holder

in #woodworking7 years ago

I've been thinking of spring time today, so I figured I would make a post about a Mother's Day gift I made my Mom. It all started with a big Oak tree that had to be cut down on her property, due to it being a hazard to a electrical line. My brother and I wanted to make some use out of it, besides just firewood, so we fired up the chainsaw mill and got to work.

My Mom's dog Eli oversaw all the work. After milling everything down, I chose some of the scrap pieces to take home for further projects. One of the pieces was a curved, knotty, arched slab that I chose to use for my Mom's gift.

The next step was finding some pots that would fit onto the slab. After finding what I needed, I placed them where I wanted them, tracing the holes that needed to be cut out. I then cut out the holes with a jigsaw, which wasn't easy considering it was fairly thick oak. Next I drilled smaller holes in both ends, feeding a chain through, in order to haing the slab. After a little sanding and adjusting, it was ready to go.

I let my Mom do the transplanting and decorating--as you can see, she did a good job!
