Heute beschäftigen wir uns mit dem Ansetzen von Schellack, Handelsüblichen Schellackpoliruren und den benötigten Lösemitteln.
Als erstes werden wir uns Gedanken machen über die Lösemittel zum ansetzen von Schellack.
Lösemittel
Schellack löst sich in verschiedenen Lösemitteln. Wir möchten jedoch nur auf die Traditionelle Methode eingehen, dieses ist das Auflösen in Alkohol oder auch Ethylalkohol. Früher wurde der verwendete Alkohol auch Weingeist genannt.
Der Alkohol muss zum auflösen von Schellack sehr rein sein, das heißt er sollte Wasserfrei sein und nur geringe bis keine Fremdstoffe enthalten.
Der heutige Ethylalkohol muss nicht trinkfähig gemacht sein. Dazu werden geringe Mengen Giftige Stoffe zugemischt. Dieser Alkohol wird denaturierter Alkohol genannt. Dieser ist frei zu erwerben. Es empfiehlt sich den Angaben des Schellacks - Herstellers zu folgen, was den zu verwendenden Alkohol angeht.
Wir nutzen Alkohol aus der Apotheke.
Ansetzen von Schellack
Schellack wird im Verhältniss von 4 Teilen Blätterschellack zu 1 Teil Alkohol angesetzt.
Das heißt, nach alten Rezepten folgendes: Für die herstellung von einem Quart (0,946 l) wiegen wir 12 Unzen (372,4 g) Blätterschellack ab und geben diese in ein Glasgefäß mit drei Tassen Alkohol. Dieses entspricht einem Verhältniss vo 4:1.
Lasst die Mischung über Nacht stehen, bei verklumpung der Blätter müsst Ihr das Gefäß öfter schütteln, anschließend filtert Ihr die hergestellte Flüssigkeit durch mehrere Lagen Stoff (zum Beispiel ein Küchentuch auch Baumwolle). Nun haben wir eine Schellack - Grundpolitur, welche in den Verhältnissen von 3:1, 2:1 und 1:1 zum Polieren verwendet werden.
Um diese Verhältnisse zu erreichen verwenden wir ein Messgefäß mit den unten genannten Rezepten.
- Um 4:1 - Schellack auf ein Verhältniss von 3:1 zu verdünnen, geben wir einen viertel Messbecher Alkohol auf einen Messbecher 4:1 - Schellack.
- Um 4:1 - Schellack auf ein Verhältniss von 2:1 zu verdünnen, geben wir einen dreiviertel Messbecher Alkohol auf einen Messbecher 4:1 - Schellack.
- Um 4:1 - Schellack auf ein Verhältniss von 1:1 zu verdünnen, geben wir einen Messbecher Alkohol auf einen halben Messbecher 4:1 - Schellack.

Handelsübliche Schellackpoliruren
Wer sich das Ansetzen von Schellack - Politur ersparen möchte kann heute auch verschiedene Polituren auf Basis von Schellack kaufen. Diese sind jedoch meist keine reine Schellack - Polituren, den die Hersteller geben verschiedenste Zusätze hinzu welche auch verschieden mit Holz reagieren. Daher empfiehlt es sich vor der Benutzung entsprechende Test durchzuführen.
Beim kauf von Fertigen Schellackpolituren ist darauf zu Achten welche Inhaltsstoffe verwendet wurden.

Today we deal with the preparation of shellac, commercially available shellac polishes and the required solvents.
First of all, we will think about solvents for applying shellac.
Solvent
Shellac dissolves in various solvents. However, we only want to go into the traditional method, this is the dissolution in alcohol or ethyl alcohol. Previously, the alcohol used was also called alcohol spirit.
The alcohol must be very pure to dissolve shellac, that is, it should be anhydrous and contain only small to no foreign substances.
Today's ethyl alcohol does not have to be made drinkable. For this purpose, small amounts of toxic substances are added. This alcohol is called denatured alcohol. This is free to purchase. It is advisable to follow the instructions of the shellac manufacturer with regard to the alcohol to be used.
We use alcohol from the pharmacy.
Preparation of shellac
Shellac is used in the ratio of 4 parts shellac to 1 part alcohol.
That is, according to ancient recipes: For the production of one quart (0.946 l) we weigh 12 ounces (372.4 g) of leaf shellac and place it in a glass jar containing three cups of alcohol. This corresponds to a ratio of 4: 1.
Let the mixture stand overnight, if the leaves clump together, you must shake the vessel more often, then filter the liquid produced through several layers of fabric (for example, a kitchen towel and cotton). Now we have a shellac base polish, which is used in the proportions of 3: 1, 2: 1 and 1: 1 for polishing.
To achieve these ratios we use a measuring vessel with the recipes below.
- To dilute 4: 1 shellac to a ratio of 3: 1, we add a quarter cup of alcohol to a measuring cup 4: 1 - shellac.
- To dilute 4: 1 shellac to a ratio of 2: 1, we add a three - quarters beaker of alcohol to a measuring cup 4: 1 - shellac.
- To dilute 4: 1 shellac to a ratio of 1: 1, we add a measuring cup of alcohol to half a measuring cup 4: 1 - shellac.

Commercial Shellac Policies
Anyone who would like to avoid the use of shellac polish can now also buy various polishes based on shellac. However, these are usually not pure shellac polishes, which the manufacturers add various additives which also react differently with wood. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out appropriate tests before use.
When buying finished shellac polishes, pay attention to which ingredients were used.
