FLAMMABLE ICE BUBBLES

Trapped beneath the surface of Lake Abraham in Alberta, Canada, are thousands of frozen methane bubbles, which create a stunning visual effect. When organic matter such as leaves and dead animals, falls into the lake, it is consumed by the bacteria living on the bottom. This process releases large bubbles of methane that then rise to the surface and are trapped by the ice on top.

Beautiful as this phenomenon may be, it is actually incredibly dangerous. Methane is highly flammable and therefore when these bubbles pop, they do so with explosive force. 

DOES IT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE PLANET? 

Yes it does. 

Methane is a greenhouse gas, which is more powerful than the carbon dioxide approximately 25times powerful and it contributes to global warming when released into the air. 

THERE IS A CYCLE ON HOW IT IS BEING FORMED

As methane is released into the air which contributes to global warming, the warmer temperature causes more frozen ground around the lake to collapse and more leaves, trees go into the lake and increased the organic matter for bacteria to feed on. In this process, more methane is produced. 

DO THESE LAKES CAUSE DAMAGE? 

The rate of methane released by each lake may not cause much damage but the consolidated amount from millions of lakes is extremely damaging.

Scientists have created various methods to test the presence of methane. They create holes in the ice while holding a lighter on top. When this gas comes out it creates massive flames which pop into the air indicating it has been released.
