Spinning was (and is) perfect for those times when the other work is done: you can sit together and talk and spin, you can do it while helping the kids do their homework, you don't need perfect lighting, even old arthritic hands may be able to do so. You can even carry a drop spindle in your handbag and do it while you're waiting for the bus or on a train journey ;)
