Steemit 0.19.2 Released 31st of August

I wrote about the lack of updated Steem Nodes 10 days ago. Since then no more of the Top 20 witnesses have updated to the latest release.

Even though 0.19.2 is "only" a hotfix, which involves some bugfixes of the communications between nodes, it's still a sign of how active a witness is in maintaining their nodes.

I'm sure many of the witnesses are doing great work in the field of Steemit, but running a witness requires attention to the network and keeping it up-to-date with current fixes and other changes that occur in the community.

Update Regarding Latest Version

As @anyx mentions in the comments, the latest version 0.19.2 only applies to nodes that does Peer2Peer communications on the network. This means nodes that communicate the chain to each others, like seed nodes and full nodes. Witness nodes does not do this, they read the chain trough feeds from seed nodes and should not be handling communication to the network over P2P, for security precautions.

I have edited out my previous statement that the nodes running 0.19.1 is outdated.

Outdated Witnesses in Top20

While none of the Top20 witnesses is more than one version behind, there are still seven witnesses behind on an old version.

Outdated Witnesses, Position 21+

While there is no Top20 witness running anything older than the previous version, there are some on the 21+ position that runs an even older version. Version 0.19.1 was released July 21st, now two months ago. This version included some significant updates to issues related to bandwidth issues that users had, among other things.

Nodes that run an older version than the current major version, which currently is 0.19.x, gets disabled by the network. At the moment we have 14 nodes disabled out of the Top 100 because of this. Another seven nodes, which runs the current version, is disabled due to other reasons.

Your Vote, Your Voice, Your Power

Everyone on Steem has a vote on who should be qualified for making sure all transactions are recorded accurately in the chain of events (the blockchain). The more Steem Power a user has, the larger their vote weighs for a witness.

A witness job is to run a dedicated node that records all transactions on the Steemit webpage, posts/votes/comments and more, for inclusion in the blockchain. Being a witness requires dedication and precession. A failing node will result in less than optimal performance on the frontends, like Steemit.com and other web pages that utilize the Steem Blockchain.

Every user can, and should, vote on 30 witnesses on the Steem Witness Voting Page.
