The Steemit Witnesses in numbers - some interesting insights + musings

in #witness7 years ago (edited)

Inspired by the Steemit BI posts by @paulag, I have also attempted to look at some of the figures behind the Steemit platform and see if there is anything interesting we can learn about the Witnesses. I have limited my analysis to the top 30 voted witnesses to account for the fluctuations that might occur at the lower end of the top 50 rank list. I compiled the data from the profile pages and steemd.com (for the SP values) and the information is accurate as of 22/10/2017 (unless I made some unintended typos).

So what you see is the list of the top 30 ranked users by witness votes, followed by their reputation score, number of followers, number of users they follow, the F/F ratio (which is equal to the number of follower/number of users followed), the number of posts, location description in their profile, date joined and their SP. I have also highlighted the top 10% in light red and the bottom 10% in light yellow for each column.

Just for the record, if you were considering becoming a witness (and want to put up a good case/argument) or perhaps wondering what your accomplishments on Steemit rank against some of the top people, here are the averages for the top 30 voted witnesses for these categories:

Average reputation: 64
Average number of followers: 4043
Average number of people followed: 305
Average number of posts: 1918 (roughly 3 posts per day if they start on March 2016)
Average SP: 233415

To find out which of these factors mattered the most, I took out the top 10% and bottom 10% of the values and recalculated the average, and compared the difference to the original values that I calculated. It turns out that both the number of people followed and the SP of these users differed the most (by some 30%), whereas the rest of the values were more or less similar. I think this is a good confirmation that having a large number of followers and creating a few posts will go a long way towards having a good standing in the community (which is probably why they are nominated to be the witnesses).

I have deliberately not compared the reputation score between witnesses and other members of the community (since there is still some debate over the validity of this score), nor have I included the SBD value because this is also a little bit controversial (also I think $$$ shouldn't be the primary aim/benefit of the platform for people to seek).

Some witnesses of note:

I hope this was interesting to at least some of you out there on Steemit :)

Very insightful info. great work. It seems that most witnesses do authoring less than other contributions

Thanks for the comment. I am working my way up to more in-depth analysis, once I figure out a better way to extract data from the Steem database and start putting up some fancy charts.

It would be good to look into the ratio between posts and comments for each individual, because no doubt there are people who comment more than they post (like me), and people who post more than they comment. I am thinking of doing some profiling of user behaviour if I can manage to wrangle some data out of steemsql.com.

Nice work. Thanks for the averages.

All of the witnesses joined over a year ago. That should tell everyone that it takes time to build a good rep and followers.

re: jerry - he is a steemit believer but he is also a master at driving followers from other social media that he is on. Not to mention that most of his posts are long and valuable. I'm not surprised he has that many followers.

All of the witnesses in my analysis except for @jerrybanfield, who has more than made up for it by posting at about the same rate as @klye, which just goes to show that effort counts for a lot on Steemit :)

Thanks for sharing the link. I have read the post and would like to give you one of my votes because I think you've earned it!

Thank you So much

Just a little observation that gaining some very unusually high number of followers in a short amount of time was not due to followers discovering interesting content on steemit. A lot of that was due to marketing and advertising campaigns outside of steemit. Those followers were convinced (sometimes by misleading claims) into joining, following and voting for the advertiser who brought them in by various tactics, including questionable ones.

I am not very active on other social media sites, but it would be great if you could highlight some of these false marketing/advertising campaigns. I guess even Steemit isn't immune to these types of activities but it is up to those of us that know better to inform and educate the rest of the community, especially new comers.

Interesting data pulled from the database

Great job! Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks. I hope you found it somewhat interesting. I am on the lookout for another set of data to try and analyse.
