Don't really know much about witnesses, other than it seems like they "run things."

Ideally it would seem that we should vote for the witnesses that serve some version of Steemit that's in alignment with our own hopes and ambitions. A bit like local government, perhaps? But it seems quite difficult to find out what each witness really stands for. Specifically, do they stand for the long term good of the community or simply lining their own pockets?
