It is important that everyone can thrive in Steem-City, like Amsterdam the Red-Light-District is not everywhere in the entire Amsterdam, and Coffeeshops as well are not everywhere in the city. So using Amsterdam as an example of a well working city where people really thrive, so must we facilitate Steemit.com as well in order to secure that everyone who comes here get a good first impression before they sneak off to the side-streets for the forbidden fruit.

The biggest problem with porn is that there are children as young as age six posting on steemit. They have accounts and unbelievably they know the computer code to post. Their friends come and see what they are doing.
Steemit has to be safe for the kids. Somehow, steemit must integrate with browser parental controls. Freebornangel hits it right. Steemit must hit its potential as it is a wonderful tool. At the same time comes the art aspect of steemit where the difference between art and porn is unclear in the minds of children - if it is pure enough for a public museum and the Sistine Chapel then it is not porn, it is life captured as David with a sling. It is the Middleton gardens of Charolette. Artists should strive for inspiration over the vulgar and yet, there is that in the world that is dark which must have a spotlight shined upon it.

I think that steemit should encompass all legal content, and indeed, keep kids from accessing content that wasn't made for kids.
I have suggested a type of account where a new subkey that allows control of NSFW filtering controlled by another account, and a process to unlock this when the age of consent is reached - even a date could be locked in. And a peer to peer certification for age...
So is #steemit a #pedogate sting operation?

I think that there should be some leeway for people with other cultural norm than the puritan Anglo-Saxon and Spanish. I am Scandinavian like you and have a hard time sending completely innocent stuff into the evil fray of NSFW-anal-pornland because of a single nipple placed on the wrong body. Free speech is about giving some room - especially in a globalised world. But if you only let the most offended set up the rules we might just as well pay a coalition of radical-feminist, ISIS and US-conservative consultants to set up the censoring :)
I am all for Free Speech, I am also for the individuals right to chose what they want to focus on/listen to/watch or read without distractions from what they want to avoid.
The majority of the world we live in is religious, about 17% of the world population are non-religious.
If we are going to make Steemit a global brand for everyone in the world - we have a duty to make Steemit.com (the official steem-site) to be as family-friendly as possible when they enter into our platform.
We have heard other suggestions like "SubSteem" (please find a better name) that @mughat is constantly promoting on SteemSpeak 24/7 Talk-Radio which also is an interesting idea which we should think about and draft up sooner or later to find a good implementation if the community wants that.
In the current EULA you have to be 13 years old to join Steemit.com
Which makes steemit.com owned by Steemit Inc in the USA compliant to censor 18+ content from their website which is why the NSFW tag has an effect, if people use it. So to make steemit.com 100% compliant with the laws, we need a section where you have to confirm you are 18+ to enter, or turn "Safe Mode On/Off" like http://liveleak.com has.

I am all for practical solutions :) Right now Steemit is small and not at all representative of the global population. (And religious does not necessarily mean puritan by the way). The current system to handle NSFW-Bad narighboorhood-adult content is to tag it #nsfw. If this is done as the first tag, the post is hidden - but you can easily see it with a press of the button. So a system already exist, it just doesn't not give complete security for minors and parent who want to control what they see. (it is hard to unsee graphic pornography).
On the other hand you also have to serve the crowd that is actually here, and if you could look at the demographic I believe that you would see a strong liberal/libertarian majority from a rather diverse geographical origin. What I propose is a way to refine the system making it have a hard border to for example hard-core porn , and a softer border that actually just use the existing system. I simply think it would be bad if content that was not sexual in nature had to be on a completely other page. A #nsfw-tag should be enough for this:
I am also on the Diaspora social network and have been for more than 3 years, and even though it's user might be more to the left than users here (or actually more European than American) it does have many similarities to Steemit, and the #nsfw-tag combined with a blocking feature does work well... except for hardcore pornography. The thing you write about US law just support this.
If Steemit is ever big enough there will have to be taken special measures, just like Facebook and the rest does. Censoring Chinese political opinions etc. :(

That's absolutely fine by me, just give Steemit it's own seperate adult section to post whatever they want uncensored. Then if people want to they can go looking at those types of tags while being unaffected by all the people who will inevitably whine hysterically about seeing some nipples.

Lol @ hypothetical title. I was under the assumption that if NSFW is a tag, then it wouldn't show up on any feeds unless one goes to check out that tag.
This is a perfect idea and it will also stop posts from being flagged for nude nipples! I however do believe that its rather cold these days so I don't understand nude nipples... It's winter so I'd say maybe the nipples need a coat and having a perfect warm spot like a adult content place would keep them warm, I think... Not sure, i don't speak nipple!
Nipples are fine with babies attached, but not so much with clothes pins and candle wax....it is all about context...free the nipples! I'd let my grandkids watch a breast feeding nipple if we stumble upon one at the mall but not the candle wax and clothes pin nipple, which wouldn't be at the mall anyways.

what I mean is a website that hosts nude pics will be subject to certain laws.
If those laws are broken by the users of the website, eventually it will fall on the owners whether they posted the content or not.
Since I made this comment I'd like to clairify I am only against: revenge porn, reposting photos from other websites (not original), and other illegal stuff.
One time steem is brought up in the news for hosting illegal porn all users are responsible becaues we pride the platform on anarchist ideals. So if the community doesn't flag, then it kind of like we accept it. In some ways anyways.
If a porn star wants to share her life with us, nothing wrong with that. I'm more against bad science posts than boobies that chose to be here.

I will have to leave this site if porn is not regulated because of my daughters custody issues. I'm staying with her and her children until their custody case is settled . Right now all our online behavior is under observation.
