People do need to understand that the witnessed have an impact on the future of Steemit. So it is, in my opinion, utmost important that steemcommunity's voice will be heard!
I will go through the witness section every month or so. I look to see who is active, which one is working on community projects, etc. I have changed my votes a few times over the last 6-9 months of being on steemit. I would really suggest everyone take voting for a witness seriously.
I investigate the witness, check their stats and the things I mentioned above. The better the witness, the better the blockchain.
Well said @goldendawne! It certainly isn't something where you complete your list and never look back at it. The witnesses are a reflection of this blockchain, so all the better to do your due diligence. This might be something you should consider addressing in your Ask Dawne segment, if you haven't already, because I know for most new folks, this is the last thing on their minds.
I totally agree. I think when we're new, it's the last thing on our minds, but really, it should be front and center!

We should point out the importance of the witnesses and inform them about potentially good witnesses! But we should be aware that we are not forcing them to vote on a particular one!
