Why Getting Snowed-In For A New England Blizzard Isn't So Bad After All

Hello Steemit friends,

I've lived in New England on and off for nearly two decades yet, it's still hard to put into words the way I feel when I know a blizzard is brewing.

Yes, it's cold. Yes, it's bleak, and aside from the occasional growl of blades from a lonely plow truck, the silence can at times be deafening.

Perhaps it's because these winter months are something that you've come to expect and welcome —with a similar feeling you have when expecting an old friend to stop by for dinner.

The thought of sitting next to a warm fire, sipping a glass of red wine and a cozy glow that comes with being snowed in can bring a strange sense of familiar comfort.

But maybe that's just it. These winter blizzards force us to slow life down to a drum beat likened to the droll "tick tock, tick tock" of a clock from yesteryear— bringing into focus with needlepoint precision what and who is most important to you.

The snow has a way of prioritizing your life without you even having to think about it.

Decisions about food become more rational and destinations become more measured. Just the thought of venturing out will be decided by the "who" it is you're traveling for, and the "why" will be most paramount, of course.

New England winter—the quietness, the stillness, the solitude...the crunch of the mounds of snow pillaged under your fur lined boots...the "wicked" wind-kissed snap in the air as it stings your eyes. Yet— you feel so warm and protected in spite of it all.

Maybe it's because you understand that after the raging wind is sated and Old Man Winter has called the final act, underneath in silvery slumber is the hopeful beauty that spring always brings.

I always loved a good Western NY blizzard! The world has a special kind of silence during them.

Glad you understand what I'm talking about! Hope you enjoyed my blog post :)

I definitely did. I grew up in Rochester, so it brought back a lot of memories!

So glad you were able to relate :)
