Principle 1: Don't Worry

Don't worry, sounds easy enough. But it is also the same as when in teaching meditation they say "don't think" or "stop thought!"

Easy to say, but very difficult to perform in practice if you have ever tried...

And matter of fact, this is usually the biggest misunderstanding or misinformation students can learn when first learning to meditate. They often say things like, "I drift off" or "I keep thinking about blah".

Rumination

I believe an easier way to think about it, is to use psychological terms. "Ruminate" comes to mind. It means, think deeply about something or chew the cud. I like this definition, as I am sure you can easily think of a time where you thought of something, and then this thought led to another thought, which then led to another thought, and before you know it, you're day dreaming about a topic way off from the first thought.

It's like when you hit a bell...it reverberates...dong...dong...dong...dong.

This is just like when you have that first thought. Once you have the first thought it then leads you down the garden path to other thoughts.

Looking at it from a sleeping perspective, this is exactly what happens in your dreams. Your mind first talks to you as you drift off to sleep, and then the "word" thoughts become "image" thoughts...or dreams.

Both of these examples are quite natural to a human being...ie, waking thoughts and unconscious dreaming...so do we want to kill them off, is that what "don't worry" means?

No.

Staying Natural

Thinking and Dreaming are natural and occur at a layer in your consciousness whereby they are impossible to stop indefinitely (unless you're brain dead). You may be able to forcefully pause them, but eventually that energy builds up and overflows again. This is natural and the nature of our consciousness.

Awareness is the Key

Then if we are not stopping thought, then what are we doing?

You are basically stepping aside from your thoughts. You are taking your awareness and looking at the thoughts as a third party observer. As soon as you attach to your thoughts, then that is the moment you start ruminating or daydreaming. That is no good. That is when you are no longer in the present.

So "Don't Worry" is about being aware. Naturally aware of all that is occurring. This includes all five senses and your thoughts. This is why I prefer the Buddhist structure whereby thought is seen as another sense. Thereby, your awareness is simple aware of all 6 senses in the present moment - Seeing, Hearing, Smelling, Tasting, Feeling, and Thinking.

Keep it Simple, Like a Child

It is very simple. It is also very natural. In fact, you were once naturally like this when you were a child before you were taught how to talk and think etc.

This is why it is sometimes called "Child's Mind".

But please do not mistake it for being childish of a regressive state. It is actually a progressive state, where you are breaking free to a higher consciousness above the bonds of your magnetic thoughts, which are always trying to pull awareness back in to feed them.

What About Mantra or Prayer?

Other schools use the toolsets of japa (or mantra) or prayer to "still the mind". For those who have never performed this technique, it is not necessarily the number of repetitions that is important. The repetition is a way to tie up what the Buddhists call the 6th consciousness, or thinking mind. It basically gives the mind something to do so it does not ruminate.

The idea is that once the mind can concentrate on a mantra or prayer, then the student should drop the mantra. The student should then rest in the emptiness of their own mind. This is the purpose of the tool set.

But unfortunately, without the proper knowledge, people have forgotten the stages, and some have continued to focus on the finger instead of looking towards the moon!

Now, in Wing Chun Qi Gong, I have already explained that awareness is the key to "don't worry". And instead of providing a mind tool like a mantra, I'll provide you a energy tool. In short, we'll be using the energy (Qi) to quiet the mind.

Alpha, Beta, Gamma

Is this similar to changing brain waves?

Yes.

You'll be changing your brain waves so that you are in a more receptive state so that you can work directly with your subconscious mind. But before we get into all that, simply "don't worry".
