Chance Encounter

This Week's Prompt

“I said drama, darling, give me drama!” shouted the photographer. His model squinted even more and tilted her head in front of the sheer white backdrop. Alexa watched with hesitant fascination from the catering table. The model had on what looked like an explosion of peacock feathers and six inch stilettos, which made Alexa grateful for her more manageable sandals. It was quite the walk across the studio space from the dressing room, which posed a surprisingly difficult task in the long, fur dress she’d been put in.

“I’d avoid anything with sauce,” advised a model joining her at the table. Alexa had maintained a steady stream of mini-quiches to sate her nerves, and was reaching for the shrimp. “Unless you want to see the bill for that dress, that is.” The girl gestured her long nails to Alexa’s outfit before clawing a nearby strawberry.

“Oh, uh, thank you,” Alexa pulled her hand from the food. “My name’s Alexa, I’m new.”

“I can tell,” the model raised one of her chiseled eyebrows and smiled. “Genevieve. You might have seen me in last month’s Vogue? Page 22.”

“Oh, yeah,” Alexa nodded her head. She didn’t have the courage to confess to not reading it or any fashion magazine, really. She had read that this gig paid better than her usual work for commercials.

“Be the peacock! You are a beautiful bird, now fly!” The photographer was now flapping his arms between shots, his calls echoing through the studio. The avian model still looked intensely blasé in expression.

“Hey, can I ask you a question?” Alexa ventured. Genevieve flipped her hair over her shoulder and looked into Alexa’s eyes.

“Shoot.”

“Do you like working these convention center events?”

“For modeling, they’re not bad,” answered Genevieve, “I’d rather be working a trade show though; they pay more than convention center gigs, and it’s easier; you just wear expensive designs and mingle.” Genevieve thought that Alexa was daydreaming over what she’d just told her. “Now it’s my turn,” she said, jolting Alexa back to the present, “Talk to me about what you’ve been doing up until now.”

“Well this is the first strictly modeling gig I’m doing. I’ve worked in commercials for some time now and I thought it was time to branch out,” she explained, “I’d like to one day have my own line of clothing or cosmetics.” “Don’t we all,” Genevieve said, and then looking at Alexa daydreaming again, told her that she’ll have to establish herself first, to get the higher paying gigs.

“You do have your professional modeling portfolio, right?” Alexa did have some great photos, but no professionally prepared modeling portfolio, which she sheepishly admitted to Genevieve. “We’ll have to get you going on that pronto, and I know the right photographer for you,” Genevieve told her. “I can introduce you after this is over, if you want.”

Alexa knew she needed a portfolio, and Genevieve seemed to be nice and willing to give her a hand getting started. She agreed to accompany Genevieve to meet the photographer at the end of the day. She wore a fur dress because her part was being a cougar. Her photo session went great and the photographer never got frustrated, as he had with the peacock girl.

Genevieve reappeared right before the photo session ended, and after Alexa changed back into her street clothes, the two walked out to the parking lot, and right into a beautiful bronze Maserati. “Wow what a nice car,” said Alexa, “You must do very well at modeling.” Genevieve, after a pause said, “I do more than model dear. I’m also a modeling agent, and I see a lot of potential in you.”

“I saw it as I watched the last part of your shoot – you’ve got the natural talent for modeling. Every direction you were given, you gave the photographer exactly what he’d asked of you. You made his job easy for the time you were posing for him.”

Alexa consumed Genevieve’s words and once again went into daydream mode. Were her daydreams about to become reality? As she pictured her coming success, and how she may even earn enough money to buy a car like Genevieve’s, Genevieve snapped her out of it when she said, “We’re here.”

“Here” was a mansion. A very beautiful one that Alexa thought some famous architect must have designed. “Um, excuse me, but is this the photographer’s home?” she asked.

“It’s her home, but her studio is here too,” Genevieve informed her. “A female photographer – how nice that will be – not that I dislike male photographers, but some can get a little touchy sometimes,” Alexa replied.

“Okay,” Genevieve said, “Now I’m going to introduce you to a very famous photographer. Her name is Althana VonHoover.” “No way… really? THE Althana VonHoover?” Alexa recognized the name immediately. She knew that Althana’s exhibits get lots of acclaim, but all she knew about them was that she’d heard they were usually very strange and sometimes shocking.

“A couple of important things you should know,” Genevieve continued, “the first one being, Althana was at the convention center and watched your photo shoot. I’ll tease you by letting you figure the second one out and just tell you that Althana works exclusively with the world’s top 5 models. When she saw you, a space opened up in that top five list that needs a replacement.

Just be yourself in there and you’re on your way… with me as your agent, of course.
