Take me Now

Who would have thought that a simple trip to the grocery store for my wife would have resulted in this? She left the house, grocery list in hand, and an armload of cardboard to drop off at the recycling center. That was the last time I ever saw her.

Three hours later, when Gloria still hadn’t returned from her few errands, I texted her to ask if she was on the way home. We had plans to go to Bill and Shirley’s to play cards at 7:00 and it was already 5:30. When I got no reply to the text, I tried calling. Again no reply. I couldn’t imagine a scenario that fit - where she would be this late and not answer either phone or text?

Thirty minutes passed and I was feeling simultaneously pissed and scared. Surely nothing bad had happened. But if not, why the hell hadn’t she came home or at least answered me.

I turned on the TV to see if there was something I was missing. Sure enough, there it was, people were missing all over the country. They were calling it an invasion of aliens. People just disappeared from earth, “poof”, and scientists had discovered an alien spacecraft orbiting the earth. There was a broadcast, in all languages, coming from the ship saying that there was a schedule and everyone would be claimed in due time. There was even an app online you could put in your photograph and social security number and it would tell you when you were scheduled to be taken.

When the aliens come get me this Saturday, I’ll certainly be ready to go. I’m tired of being here with my wife gone, and half my friends missing. Nothing is running right now, the town is in chaos.

Of all the things that bothered me in this half-baked world, one that really made me realize that she was gone was that dirty window. Gloria would never let our front door window look that like. But I just didn’t have the heart to clean it myself. It seemed sacrilegious somehow, like I was erasing a piece of who she was. The food I fixed myself was bare sustenance, I missed Gloria’s cooking. Now I realized how much she did to make our house a home. All the attention she paid to the details. It just didn’t seem like life was worth living here on Earth anymore. I couldn’t wait for Saturday. I only prayed that when I got to wherever they were taking us, I would be placed with Gloria.
