Cemetery Wednesday Walk

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago (edited)

My photos for #wednesdaywalk are in a cemetery. I’ve combined the post with #cemeteryphotos.

Wednesday Walk is hosted by @tattoodjay and Cemetery Photos hosted by @melinda010100.

This cemetery is in St. Georges, Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The church doors were opened to the surrounding community in September 1860.

Hubs and I were driving by and stopped to walk around because it looked like a beautiful place with the statues and iron archway at the entrance.

Many of the older country churches have closed or combined into a central one. Although not a heavily populated area, St. George’s Catholic Church is still active with Mass once a week.

View of St. George’s church as you approach from the road. From this angle it looks like you would drive straight into it but the road does turn to safely pass the church.

Some of the gravestones:

The cemetery is on an incline but easy to walk around.

I always love seeing the Celtic crosses. Mostly these crosses are on the older gravestones.

This small Celtic cross grave marker is carved from wood.

I don’t know anyone resting in this country cemetery but may they all Rest In Peace.

Thanks for sharing your Wednesday walk. I always like looking at cemeteries on an incline.

There is a fantastic necropolis in Glasgow built onto a hill.

The average graveyard digger would ask for a flat surface 99 times out of a hundred but some factor drove these people to place their graves onto this sloping part of PEI. Intriguing.

Welcome and thanks @ozkdawg. I think they just went with the lay of the land. 😊

Probably the grave diggers preferences come last in cemetery planning.

I chuckle when you mention grave diggers. There was an elderly man who often sat in the bench at the grocery store. I asked someone who he was and they said, ‘That’s Gravedigger.’
He had dug graves in this area for years (sometimes by hand) and earned himself the nickname. I later found out his last name was McKenna.

Thanks @esteem and for your great platform.

I think no infact I know that has to be one of the coolest entrance ways to a cemetry with all those statues and they look so pristine and like new, thanks for sharing with us this beautiful looking cemtry

thanks for joining Wednesday Walk !tip

I thought the same JJ. There’s a woman , Lorraine, who plays cribbage where Hubs and I play. I knew she lived in that area and asked her about the cemetery. She said her husband had made the iron archway. She also asked why we didn’t stop in to her home. I didn’t know the location or her last name.
That’s the generosity of the people here...even if you stopped in unexpectedly you would be welcomed in for a spot of tea. 😊
Thanks JJ @tattoodjay for hosting #wednesdaywalk and for the tip.

Thats so cool, i thought that kind of welcoming feel in an area was a thing of the past, glad to hear it still exists in some places ;)

Yes, I was surprised and it was so lovely to hear.

Gestures like that refresh ones belief all is not lost with humanity 👍😎👍
